Strength of a Different Kind

Strength of a Different Kind

Summary: Faramir's thoughts before his return to Osgiliath. Short one-shot

Disclaimer: Not mine. Not making any money.

Note: This is something I came up with as part of a class assignment. Not sure how good it is, but I think it makes a good point. I figured I may as well post it. Let me know what you think.

Faramir walked through the halls of Minas Tirith. Pippin's words from earlier that day echoed through his mind.

I think you have strength of a different kind.

What exactly did that mean? Strength of a different kind. Faramir had always believed that strength was simply a physical thing. People said that there was also a kind of emotional or mental strength. Or strength of character. So which had Pippin meant? And could it really be considered strength since it wasn't physical?

Faramir remembered something Boromir had said many years before. Faramir wasn't doing well with his warrior training. As he got older he preferred to be reading or studying. He believed knowledge was as important as any weapon.

"Not everyone is meant to be a warrior, Faramir. Scholars are important to. Without them our history would be lost and the deeds of our ancestors forgotten. We all have our gifts, Faramir. Mine is the sword. Yours is knowledge. Both are important. You are strong too. Don't let father tell you otherwise."

Faramir had been about sixteen at the time. He had believed Boromir then. Did he still believe him now?

'I'll make you proud, Boromir. Any way I can.' Faramir vowed.

With that he headed for the stables. He had to return to Osgiliath. Time would prove his strength, whatever kind it was. He would do his duty to his people and his city. He would show that though he wasn't as physically strong as Boromir had been, he did possess strength of a different kind. He would show them all.
