The cold of winter bit the tip of her sweet button nose, leaving a red mark in its wake. If there was one thing she liked about the cold season, it was the color blue. Blue was the only color she couldn't seem to get enough of. It was the only color she found herself staring into at every spare moment.
"Jeanette, come on already!" Brittany dramatically waved her hand at her sister, indicating that she needed to hurry up.
"Oh, sorry Brittany." She clumsily took a few steps toward her two sisters, both wrapped tightly in their signature colored jackets and scarves.
Brittany always found the walk home from school to be the most annoying part of her day, everyone wanting to talk about their day. Like gym class with Alvin wasn't bad enough. She was 17 for crying out loud, and Ms Miller still didn't trust Brittany with a car of her own.
"Oh! Theodore and I made the most delicious opera cake today in Home Ec. Ms. Watkins was so impressed with us!" Eleanor continued to smile at both of her sisters when she was done telling her story.
Brittany just rolled her eyes at her chubby sister. "Wow Ellie another cake, have you ever thought of making something different?"
Jeanette raised her dark eyebrows. "Brittany, don't be rude."
Eleanor quickly put an end to something she thought would progress into a long argument. "Oh no it's fine Jeanette, Brittany was just giving her opinion. I mean I should be making more things other than cakes."
Jeanette fell behind her sisters as they raced each other to the front door of their house. That's when Jeanette saw the blue, only a few houses down. Simon Seville, an absolute gem in her eyes. Simon gave a simple colgate smile and a wave, but it was enough to make Jeanette's heart flutter in her petite chest.
Jeanette gave a sweet smile back and headed into her house.
"Who are you guys taking to the Winter Wonderland Dance with?" Eleanor brushed her long golden locks.
Brittany frantically waved her fake tan hands in the air. "Brad's taking me! You know him right, oh he's absolutely gorgeous! He's taking me back to his place after the dance because his parents are out of town." Brittany stared into space, a wobbly smile plastered on her face.
Eleanor giggled at her older sister. "Ok Britt that's great and I'm happy for you, but please if you wouldn't mind, spare me the details."
Brittany simply huffed and rolled her eyes, before looking at Jeanette. "How about you missy, you going with anyone?"
Jeanette looked at the ground and shuffled her feet. "Nobody's asked me yet so I don't think I'll be going."
Brittany cocked her head and raised an eyebrow at her sister. "Oh Jean, that's complete bullshit, of course somebody's asked you."
Jeanette's eyes widened at her sisters profanity, before lying down on her bed, her hands placed on her stomach. "No I mean it, no one has asked me, I mean I don't really care, I know why…"
The girls' room fell silent for a few moments before Brittany went to have her Friday afternoon bath.
Eleanor walked over to her shy sister and took a seat beside her, combing a hand through her hair. "Don't worry Jeanette, someone will ask you. What about Simon?"
Just the mention of his name made her head spin. Jeanette sat up and looked at Eleanor, "He doesn't even know I exist Ellie."
