A Kiss Before Dying

AlwaysPadfoot

Dear Barty and Rabastan,

By the time you receive this, there is nothing that you will be able to do to prevent the series of events I have put into action. Once you are finished with this letter, I suggest you destroy it.

The long and short of it, however, is that I have decided to betray the Dark Lord. I will not divulge to you the details of my betrayal so that I don't put either of your lives at risk. The Dark Lord asked me to complete a task for him that will allow him to live forever; I have decided to take that thing from him and hide it, where it will never be found.

Try to understand: the Dark Lord must not live forever.

You both deserve to find your way in a world that isn't scarred permanently by war — to live lives beyond your duty to the Dark Lord. You both have a duty to yourselves to be better than just that. As I write these words I realise what you will both be thinking — saying — and I urge you to stop. I have made my decision; I will not be continuing the journey we began together. Mine stops here. You both are aware of how meticulous I am when I organise things, which means you both know that this is it.

Barty, sweetheart, my final words to you are ones I wish I could tell you every day. You are one hundred times better than your father. He never deserved you as a son, you brilliant man.

Rab, I fear that I've let you down. You will say you should have been the one to protect us — I apologise. You take Barty, and you both get as far away as you can from this war, from the Dark Lord. You're smart, and loyal, and damn you, I will haunt you if you don't.

I don't have any time to reminisce, for fear that one of you might come home early and stop me, but I do have one thing I would like to say.

Should it be true, and my life does flash before my eyes before I die, I hope it does so slowly. At least, I wish that all the hours, the days, the nights we have spent together, play slowly. Maybe, if I am lucky when Death greets me, he will let me see those memories twice, because every moment I have spent with you both made everything worth living. And on top of that, it makes everything I'm doing so much better. Because I'm not doing it for the Wizarding World, I'm doing it for the men I love.

Never doubt, that in my dying breath, I held you both in my heart.

All my love, forever and always,

Regulus.
