Hi there all you lovely peoples! *I sprinkle glitter on you because y'all are just that great* I have yet another story for you. It starts when Eponine and Marius are kids and they grow up together. Now I know that Eponine at this point in time would have been still spoiled by her parents but for the sake of the story she's poor at this age. The first chapter's kind of short, but they will get longer and later on there will be some drama ;) I hope you like it!
Eponine walked up to the bakery stand on the street right next to the Gorbeau tenement. She hated this way of life, but even at the age of 10 she knew what she had to do. The baker wasn't looking; it was the perfect moment. She took one last look around to make sure no one was paying attention, her hand was so close…
"Hey! Stealing is wrong!"
Eponine yanked her hand away and spun around to face a boy, only a couple years older than herself, who seemed to have appeared out of nowhere.
Fortunately, nobody seemed to have heard him.
"I wasn't stealing." She said in a low voice, trying to convince him.
"I saw ya."
"Alright, so I was." She sighed.
Eponine tried to walk off but the boy followed her.
"So why did you try to steal the bread?"
Eponine rolled her eyes.
"Because I don't have enough money."
"But it's only a few sous." He pointed out, slightly confused.
"Easy for you to say, bourgeoisie! Some of us can't afford it." She stated, annoyed by the audacity of his statement when she clearly wasn't one of them.
But the boy just shrugged nonchalantly.
"Sorry, I didn't mean to offend ya."
Eponine rolled her eyes again. Who was this boy, anyway?
"Never mind," She replied. "Why did you follow me?"
"I wanted to know why you had to steal bread. Just curiosity I guess. My grandfather says I'm too curious, says I need to mind my own business."
Oh great, so now he was telling her about his bourgeoisie grandfather?
"I can't imagine why," Eponine replied sarcastically, even though this strange boy didn't give any implication that he noticed it.
"Marius? Marius! Where did you run off to?"
"Uh oh! I've gotta go, my grandfather will be very cross when I get home because I should have been back by now." He started to run off then stopped abruptly and turned back towards her.
"What's your name?" He called.
"It's Eponine," she called back.
"And mine's Marius – Marius Pontmercy. See ya around, 'Ponine!"
"'Ponine?" She thought, mystified by this Marius Pontmercy and the conversation they just had.
She walked back home and couldn't stop thinking about it. She didn't realize until later that she had forgotten to go back and steal the bread.
One more thing: if you are reading my Enjonine story, Why Would Anybody Ever Look At Me, I will be installing chapter 4 soon! I promise! So stay tuned for that... XOXO
