Prologue
I have to get away…
My pursuer quickened his pace as a bend in the path came and went. He was slowly inching closer, gaining more and more speed as I began to tire out. I urged my legs to keep going, making me flinch in discomfort as a pain flared up in my side. I don't know how long I had been running, but stopping wasn't an option.
I looked up at the night sky, trying my hardest to keep my mind off the pain that erupted all over my body. The moon was full tonight, an everlasting gaze cutting through the night. Stars sprinkled the black that stretched above me, points of light we hoped would make our wishes come true. I closed my eyes, wishing this night had never happened.
I shook my head, trying to push all the thoughts away. I just wanted to survive this night.
And out of the darkness, like my own personal demon, a tree root appeared. And people who knew me would know I was the biggest klutz in the world. I tried to dodge it, but it was too late.
My body hit the ground with a loud thud. I cried out in pain, feeling my ankle twist.
My heart was pumping out of my chest, my breathing near hyperventilation. The throbbing in my leg was unbearable.
My pursuer slowed his gait, slowing to a canter, then finally stopped.
Then, barely above a whisper, I heard a chuckle. My pursuer ambulated toward me. As he was nearing his prey, a tear slowly rolled down my cheek. I wasn't ready to die yet.
He was getting ever so closer now, his steps loud in my ears.
I closed my eyes, waiting for the blow.
Closer… closer … closer … closer … then, nothing.
I was scared to open my eyes, afraid of what I'd find. I peeked though, my curiosity getting the best of me.
I turned my head slightly to the right, looking to see what was behind me. Nothing there.
I exhaled a sigh of relief. Then, there it was again.
A chuckle broke out through the darkness.
A lump formed in my throat, my mouth going dry. Oh no…
I raised my head slightly, looking toward the direction I heard the chuckle.
Under the shadow of the branches of an old maple, I saw the faint outline of a human being.
He took a step toward me, the light of the moon illuminating his shoe. This would be the first time I would see the identity of my pursuer.
He took more steps towards me, slowing bathing his whole body in light. The light of the moon revealed more of his face, though his eyes hid under the shroud of his hair. His head was down, probably thinking of the best way to kill me. He didn't really have that many options..
This man seemed familiar, though I couldn't exactly think straight, for a fog was costively shrouding my mind. Who is this man?
At the moment, he raised his head and his gaze locked with mine.
Those eyes…
My scream pierced the night.
Then, the darkness swallowed me up.
