Chapter 1

"Do it."

The words rang in my ears like poison. My hands shook and my grip on the kunai tightened. I felt the sweat dripping down my neck and my teeth clenched together.

"I said, do it."

My breath came faster. Could I really do it? Could I kill a man?

There were no other options. I had to. I would.

I slid my kunai across the man's throat and watched as his body slid to the ground. I couldn't tear my eyes away as I watched the pool of red form at my feet.

Ice ran through my veins and I dug my nails into my palms. My own blood ran down my arms and soon all I could see was red. Red at my feet, red on my hands, red everywhere. I felt a sob forming in my throat but I quickly forced it back down. I couldn't cry now. If she saw me cry, I was in for even more red.

I was torn from my daze as I felt a cold hand on my shoulder.

"Good."

My mother's voice seemed so far away that I couldn't even process it.

Something else had my attention. Something was bubbling up inside me, something strong. Fear? Fury? I didn't know. I felt it pulsing through my body… and I liked it.

It was the feeling of strength, of invincibility. The feeling of being unstoppable.

"Yes, perfect."

My mother's words snapped me back to the present as I once again looked at the body near my feet. My shoes were soaked in blood.

"I thought that killing would likely illicit some sort of reaction from you, but I never imagined it would be this strong."

I once again tore my eyes away from the body at feet and examined myself. Blue chakra surrounded every inch of me, an aura of sorts. It covered my body in blue whirls and waves as it curled around my body, pulsing and swirling.

The sight rooted my feet to the ground. If my blood had been ice before, it was fire now. I felt warm, hot, scorched even. But the feeling wasn't necessarily bad. It filled me with strength and confidence. My body felt more able than it ever had, but my mind was a different story.

My eyes darted back to the body at my feet. I felt my knees buckle underneath me and I ended up on all fours in the pool of blood beneath me. What had I done?

"Stand up." I heard my mother snap from behind me.

As much as I feared the consequences, I found my limbs unable to move as I watched the shimmering pool of blood seep over my hands. That man was dead. I didn't even know him. Had he been a criminal? A civilian? A comrade?

"Stand up!" My mother's hand roughly gripped my arm and pulled, forcing me to my feet. I winced as her hand tightened on my forearm.

"Look at me."

I continued to stare at the man on the ground, unable to take my eyes off my victim.

"Look at me, Atsuki!"

The sound of my name was enough for me to raise my gaze to meet my mother's.

"Do you know what is happening to you?"

I shook my head.

The blue chakra was still swirling around me, giving me strength beyond belief. I flexed my hands as I gauged their power. I felt as if I could demolish a building with a single punch.

"This." I felt a hand on my stomach. My mother's hand.

"This is what's happening." I looked down to see her hand placed directly over my spiraling tattoos. The black marks centered around my belly button and worked their way out to form a symbol that had always reminded me of the sun. Her hand was resting on top of my seal mark.

Confusion filled my mind. What did that mean? What did this have to with my seal?

"You've awakened it." He words did nothing to help soothe my spinning brain.

"Mother?" I said her name as a question, quietly begging for her to explain further.

"You have awakened the power of the Eight-Tails."

A/N – I know this chapter is very short (I promise they will get longer), but I just wanted to set up the story and introduce the main character. Kakashi will likely not enter the story for at least a couple more chapters, so please be patient.
