The rain falls down in torrents, a raging wind hammering it against the glass which rattles violently in its frame. The troubled sleeper stirs. Through bloodshot eyes she observes the tear-streaked windowpane. The night is black as coal, the sky illuminated only transiently by evanescent lightning bolts. The figure turns over in the bed but knows her quest is futile. Sleep will not come to this tired body now.
Relenting, her feet swing down to the carpet and pad across the floor. She shivers, pulling his tattered Northwestern tee-shirt closer around her petite frame. Before her lies a dark sweater, left haphazardly in his haste. She stoops to collect it, breathing in the familiar yet forgotten scent. Her fingers run along the cotton, delicately tracing abstract shapes. His presence still lingers here.
Feet find the bathroom and hands shower face with crystal clear water. It's cold but she doesn't flinch. His toothbrush stands solitary, away from her own. A lone blue soldier, held to attention. She places her purple counterpart in the adjacent holder.
Moving on restlessly, she enters her lounge. The azure dress he bought lies untouched on the couch. The light, diaphanous fabric shimmers in the half-light, the sequined decoration appearing almost iridescent. She sits beside it, cold fingers reaching for the cigarettes positioned precariously on the summit of his journal pile. The lighter teeters on the precipice.
Deftly she ignites and inhales in one fluid movement, carcinogens swarming to fill her lungs. Rip-roaring thunder echoes off the walls, resonating in her hollow chest. She exhales, before taking another toxic drag. Come death and welcome, Abigail wills it so.
