"Padme', you have to believe me!" Anakin pleaded. After all these years
he had expected her not to believe him. Even so, he knew he had to try.

"Padme'! Please, you must listen to me! I know that I could never make
up for all the hurt and grief I have caused," Anakin shuddered as memories
came flooding back to him, "but I want you know that I am back, for good."

Padme' still hadn't even looked at him. She had tried to run when he had
first come, but he had stopped her. Now she stood, unmoving, several feet in
front of him. He longed to have her closer, to feel her warm embrace again.
But he knew she could never forgive him.

"I am sorry," Anakin continued, wishing she would at least look at him.
"I never wanted to hurt you."

*I can't stand any more of this!* Padme' thought. *I have had enough!*
She started to look up, prepared to tell him off. She pulled her head up and
locked gazes with him. What she saw shocked her. Instead of meeting the
tired, angry eyes that she expected, she stared straight into the soft, loving
eyes she remembered Anakin having so long ago. Only now they were heavy with
guilt and sorrow.

Padme' hesitated, and Anakin just stood there, staring back. She saw a
depth in those eyes, one she wanted to explore. As she thought, she found
herself looking past his eyes and into his soul. It was then that she
realized she really believed him. She hadn't even tried before. She had just
assumed that he was gone forever, engulfed by evil. But now she realized
that, somehow, he was back.

She didn't care at that moment how it had happened, all she knew was that
he was back, and that she still loved him. Despite the things he had done,
she still loved him. Part of her didn't believe it, but she knew it to be
true. Throwing caution to the wind, she ran toward him, and through her teary
eyes she caught the look of surprise on his face. Padme' embraced him as hard
as she could, and Anakin immediately hugged her back.

Now they were both crying, and as he wiped a tear off of her cheek, she
whispered to him, "I love you, Anakin Skywalker. I always will."

He hugged her even tighter now, and placed a soft kiss on her forehead.
"I love you, too . . . my angel," he whispered back. They held each other in
an embrace that seemed go on till forever, and for the first time in years
Anakin Skywalker smiled.
