(A/N): Okay, so this is just a poem I had to do for English class. We read the book To Kill A Mockingbird and then we had to do projects. We had to do a writing assignment, so I chose to do a poem. The poem had to be at least five stanzas and had to have a quote from the book. I chose to write about where Atticus is talking to Jem about courage after Ms. Dubose dies. Enjoy!
In The Eyes of Courage
It's there, all around us.
We may not see it,
we may just choose to ignore it.
But it's there,
everyday.
It's there, not only in the men and women in uniform,
but in the eyes of a stranger in the street.
It's in the eyes of a child battling for their life.
In the eyes of someone fighting to save a life.
"Courage isn't a man with a gun in his hand,
it's when you know you're licked before you begin,
but you begin anyway and see it through no matter what.
Everyone wants to believe they have courage.
The truth is,
you never know if you have it until you really need it.
Some people get lucky.
They find that when they really need it,
it's there and they can overcome anything that comes their way.
People don't always get rewarded for their acts of courage.
Some of the bravest people go unnoticed.
They aren't in it for the glory.
They don't think they deserve a medal or statue.
They do it because that is what is needed at the time.
"Courage, it's not a man with a gun in his hand.
It's when you're licked before you begin,
but you begin anyway and you see it through,
no matter what.
You rarely win,
but sometimes you do."
