Lightsabres
Darth Vader stood in his quarters aboard the Death Star. The lights had been dimmed when the Rebels had escaped, supplying more power to the weapons, and had not been turned back up. It didn't matter, of course. Vader could see in the dark if he had to; his helmet took care of that.
He let his enhanced eyes fall on the cylinder he had placed on the table. It had been deactivated for maybe an hour, since he had taken the life of Obi Wan Kenobi. Vader had always thought it would have felt more rewarding, knowing Obi Wan was dead. Instead, he felt nothing.
Carefully, he picked up the lightsabre. He remembered watching Obi Wan build this. Shortly after they had returned from Naboo, after Qui Gon's death, Obi Wan had spent many nights reconstructing the sabre he had lost in his battle with Vader's predecessor, Darth Maul. In the span of time it had taken Obi Wan to build that new sabre, Anakin Skywalker, the boy Vader once was, had learned many things. He had learned to curse in fifteen different languages. He had learned to use the Force to throw objects around the room.
But most importantly, he had learned the joy of constructing one's own lightsabre. Vader remembered the look on his then-master's face as Obi Wan ignited the sabre for the first time, the blue blade jumping to life seemingly like magic. That was a lifetime ago.
Vader turned his attention to the cylinder he had hanging from his belt. The lightsabre he had there was his second, but the pride in constructing it had been the same as his first. In constructing this lightsabre however, he'd had more experience, and more emotions to fuel into its creation. While the first one had been constructed out of love, this one had been constructed out of anger and betrayal. It was a much more effective weapon.
But Vader couldn't help reflecting on his previous lightsabre. He remembered seeing the blade for the first time, remembered how hard he had tried to make it the same color as Obi Wan's. He also remembered the first time he had presented it to Amidala, and the smile on her face when he had explained to her in every detail just how he'd built it.
He also remembered the last time he had seen it. The lava pit. He and Obi Wan had been fighting; Amidala had been nearby. Had they been fighting about her? Vader couldn't remember. But he remembered Obi Wan kicking the lightsabre out of his hand and onto the ground, not two seconds before Anakin Skywalker had fallen to his death
Darth Vader shook his head, returning himself to the present. Those things had happened a long time ago, when he was still young and unaware of what the Force truly had to offer him. Still, he couldn't justify destroying the lightsabre that Obi Wan had built. Slowly, he walked over to the desk in his quarters and opened the top drawer. He silently placed the lightsabre in the drawer, closed it, and locked it. He didn't want any of the young officers to find it, if for some reason they needed to go into his desk.
As he exited the room, he wondered what had happened to his first lightsabre.
