Thief

The dust finally settled on the bright blue tiles. Outside of the vault, two ogre guards were lying unconsious. With a flash the items were pocketed and not a trace of theft was left behind less the small footprints on the floor. With silent speed the perpetrator left the crime scene to soon be happened upon...

"So let me get this straight. If I do this assignment I'll get a C+?"

Yusuke Urameshi, a Spirit Detective for Rekai. Famous among demons and humans alike as a fighter. However, greater problems faced him now...

"Yusuke, it's not that hard. All you have to do is..." Keiko's voice trailed off as Yusuke spaced out, stretching in his seat.

"Yusuke, are you listening?"

"Yeah, yeah. So I scribble some stupid doodle and write about it. Sounds kinda lame if you ask me..." He exclaimed with a yawn. Yusuke is notorious about avoiding his school work, as it is easily seen...

"Yusuke, don't you want to graduate and get a good job? You know, go out and make something of yourself?"

"As if I haven't done that already!" The Spirit Detective huffed and leaned back further, resting his feet on a nearby desk. The two of them sat in uneasy silence until Yusuke was fed up. "All right, all right. I'll do it. Are you happy now?" Keiko gave him one of her "I knew you'd do it Yusuke" looks.

'I swear, all she ever does is try to tell me what's good for me.' Yusuke stood up, grabbing his bag and making his way to the door. Keiko followed closely as they headed outside. At the sidewalk they parted, saying their good byes.

'I'll have to get started right away if I want to get this stupid project done on time...' "Stupid school work..." Yusuke kicked a rock and watched it skid across the pavement. As he reached it he caught a blur out of the corner of his eye. "Huh?"

For a minute he thought it was only his imagination, but as he walked on he felt a set of eyes, a set and a half to be more exact, following his every move. The boy stopped and turned, expecting the little fire youkai to land silently behind him. After a second he turned back around. Suddenly a voice called from behind him.

"Yusuke."

Yusuke jumped in surprise, wheeling around to face the small demon. Hiei wore his usual emotionless face. "What brings you around here, Hiei?"

"Hn. Koenma wanted me to give you a message." The fire demon said bluntly.

"You know, Hiei, if you keep this up, Botan's gonna think you're stealing her job."

"I'm not here to listen to your snide remarks. Koenma said that you need to be looking for a demon thief. Someone broke back into his father's vault and stole the Shadow Artifacts."

"Again? You sure it wasn't Kurama?" The boy proposed jokingly. Hiei simply returned the joke with a glare. "Jeeze, no need to get all pissy about it..." Yusuke glanced around before speaking again. "So uh, what's this guy look like?"

"Koenma doesn't know. I asked the same thing and he told me that the thief broke in and left before anyone could so much as glance at his face." He sounded disgusted over Koenma's response.

"You'd think that as often as this happens he'd like, install security cameras or something..."

"If you don't have any more questions, I'm leaving." Hiei was about to vanish but Yusuke caught him.

"Do Kurama and Kuwabara know about the case?" The demon now began to look far more agitated. Yusuke looked on questioningly, hoping he'd explain. When he got no response he decided to investigate. "What's got your feather's ruffled?"

"Koenma said it would be just the both of us working together. He said it would be "good" for me." Hiei suddenly disappeared without another word.

"He sure seems excited..."
