"Karkat...? Karkat! C'mon, wake up man! We have to go, like, right now...!"
Karkat Vantas awoke to Terezi, one of his best friends, violently shaking him. He opened his eyes and she pulled him off the ground. Before he could ask about what happened, Terezi pulled his arm and led him out of the tiny shed they were hiding in.
"Terezi, slow down! What the fuck happened?" Karkat asked. She glanced behind them and continued to run away from the shed.
"Zombies, everywhere. You fell from my window when we were trying to escape my house so I pulled you into our shed. Unfortunately, one of the walls collapsed from all the holes in it while you were sleeping. Thank God I was able to wake your stupid ass up!"
The sleepy Karkat looked around and noticed that they were headed in the opposite direction of the city.
"Well then where the fuck are we going?! The city is that way! There's got to be someone that can help us like…like the police or something!"
"Karkat, you've played a lot of zombie apocalypse games. You know what happens to the city with something like this! The place is like, Zombie Central and if we go there, we'll be just like them!" Terezi shouted at him, questioning his game knowledge for a second. They ran deeper and deeper into the woods behind Terezi's house until they reached another shed, which looked like it had been abandoned for years.
"We can hide in here for now," she told him. Terezi cautiously walked in and signaled for Karkat to follow. Together, they pushed a heavy box against the door. "Alright, Karkat, I think we're all set to sleep. Just remember, keep something near you at all times and don't sleep near a place where they can grab you."
"Yeah, yeah...Are we going to wait here until morning? Where are we going to go after this? Where the hell is everyone else?"
Terezi sighed. "We're going to that island in the middle of the lake not too far from here. Someone came by when you were unconscious and told me about it. Supposedly, there are a bunch of survivors on that island but...who knows how many are a 'bunch'? I just hope they aren't dead yet...
As for 'everyone else', my mom was bitten…and I think your dad was too. I saw him from the shed window earlier, just walking around like every other one of those mindless freaks. I'm…sorry, Karkat."
Karkat noticed Terezi's expression sadden but didn't say anything. Of course, he was sad too but there was nothing that could have been done about their parents. He took one of the blankets that were in the bag that Terezi had and placed in on the floor. He sat and patted the spot next to him.
"You did a lot today, Terezi. You need sleep too. Thanks for saving me, by the way. I don't know how I could ever repay you for that…"
Night came quickly and Terezi fell asleep almost right away. Karkat, however, stared at the ceiling for what seemed like hours thinking about the future. Would an island of strangers really be the best place to go?
