A Knife In Their Side

I'm so lost,

This isn't fair!

Please…

I am not who I always appear to be,

I am not as strong as you suppose,

I am none of what I say,

Please, I beg you listen to me!

I once knew someone who closely resembled I,

She talked like me and dressed like me and even thought like

me.

She was as innocent as I,

She knew much of the world and tried to understand,

She tried to help to get others to see,

Oh, she tried so hard!

Destiny was about to be her end

Though. Destiny showed her, where she

thought was solid ground, there was really air.

Fate was the fog around her feet and in the trees,

That blocked the sun and drove her weaknesses until,

She was lost in a bleak, gray sanctuary, with

So many paths to choose,

She collapsed in tears, as her heart gave out

And she gave into despair,

There was no hope that she could find,

Of ever finding a way, any way.

She cried and cried and wept and cried

And finally, gasping with a tearstained face she saw a stranger standing nearby,

"Please, please! Come close so you can hear me…"

He bent to hear her raspy, trembling voice.

"I beg of you, where is it? Where? Tell me…"renewed tears sprang from her eyes.

"I'm sorry miss; I don't know of what it is you speak",

"You…don't!" she looked up choking, "then there isn't one!"

She fell back against the ground, all energy left and her grief returned a double fold, "Now it's all over…"

"What do you mean?"

"I can't keep running from my pain and torture…my past, my fate…"

The stranger who did not know any of the child's troubles pleaded with her, "Miss? Is there anything I can do?" He placed a tentative hand on her shoulder.

She gasped at his touch, turning burning eyes to his for the first time, "Yes, " she spoke with fervor and incredibly unholy, menacing light in her eyes "You can kill me," He looked at her, horrified. "I'd do it myself, but I can't."

"I said I wanted to help miss, but I cannot kill you."

"Why, I am evil am I not? Do I not deserve to die?

"I cannot…"

"You didn't answer me!"

He got up and began to back away, she, too, stood up. "I have no weapon", he lied, that wasn't the reason he couldn't kill her.

"Liar!...I'm so sorry, I didn't mean that", she blinked and looked away. Turning her back to him, "Why…please, the truth", He walked behind her and placed an arm on her shoulder. She flinched, but did not move.

"Because", he turned her around and embraced her. Too weak to protest, she leaned into it. Turning hazy eyes upon him, she pulled his head down in a burning kiss. She found the knife he carried. She grabbed his hand and forced it to grip the dagger. Then she forced his hand to pull it out and force it into her lung. Finally, she let go of him. Horrified, he stared at her bleeding side. She grinned at it and pulled the knife out, collapsing again. "Thank you." She closed her eyes and lay on the ground, barely alive. He stood stalk still, unable to move. With her last strength she beckoned to him. He immediately knelt at her side. "Please…on last kiss," She was scarcely audible. He complied gently, taking her hand. When the tender moment was over, in her last moment, she summoned the energy to gaze at the stranger's face. "I…love…you" ,with he last breath used on those words, she was dead. He found tears forming in his eyes, "I love you too", They never knew each other's names, they had never met, but not long after, he was found dead, a knife in his side.

The End
