There are a billion universes in as many dimensions of reality, but he loves her in most of them. At least, he hopes he does.
At night, when she is curled up next to him with her hand on his chest, he lies awake resisting the urge to jump up and go do something. He could reinvent the sonic screwdriver, write a tune with the Beatles and explore a new planet before she wakes up. He would rather do anything than just lay there alone with his thoughts. But if he moves, he will wake her. Even if he doesn't, how would she feel in the morning, when he has had an adventure without her? He knows how she would feel, so he stays.
And he imagines that in some alternate world she is a Time Lady, waiting on him to wake. He stifles a laugh. Maybe in an alternate life they are both human. That would be best. Two humans living out a boring happy life full of everyday adventures like mortgages and babies. Growing old together and taking it for granted.
He ponders how humans spend so much of their terribly short lives sleeping. How ironic that they sleep so much, while his own species has all the time in the world and hardly sleeps at all. That's unfair. But that's the universe, isn't it? Never fair. His thoughts grow dark and he longs to get up and distract himself with a supernova or something.
But then she stirs, mumbles, and moves closer to him. All that humany-wumany warmth of her body next to his body puts his mind at ease and he imagines that alternate life.
He guesses that they would meet unexpectedly. Maybe they would stumble into each other on a snowy London street and then go out for texting and scones. Or maybe her internet would stop working and she'd try to call the company but would dial the wrong number- his number. And he would help her fix the problem and they would laugh about the mix up. Then she would start to hang up, but would ask him out instead. Because that's how boring little human lives happen, right? They would date for a couple years and get married in some little country church. Settle down in a little country house and teach at the same school. They'd both want to travel but would always put it off because a baby would be on the way or the car needed repairs. But they would be happy. Very happy.
Perhaps there is a universe where River gets a better life or Amy Pond never has to wait or Donna knows his name. There certainly was one made for Rose. But in most of them - he hopes - Clara Oswald is his world.
