Lucidity

They had started meeting one night a week when her brother Joey and their other friends were off doing whatever it was their other friends did. They would kill time by having drinks together. They would sometimes talk, and sometimes not.
Sometimes it was enough just to be with another person who understood, who just knew it and got it.
"I wonder," Serenity said suddenly, "why we chose them." She looked down at her hands.
"I'm not sure, hun. I guess, like me, you like a challenge," Mai responded. "Maybe we don't want things to be easy."
"That's what I used to think," The auburn haired girl replied, a bit pensively. "That all the work was worth it, that it meant what we both have with our friends been worth it."
"Yeah," Mai inferred. "But now..." she sighed.
"I don't know. I guess there's something to be said for easy."
Serenity nodded, wistful, but then she smiled. "But look on the bright sideā¦this is easy," she turned to her to head to face Mai.
"You and me."
"It really is, Serenity." The blonde duelist answered, smiling back.
And perhaps it was just her wine talking, but when Mai leaned across the table and kissed Serenity, it was still easy.
