It was a warm summer day in the beautiful kingdom of Albion, marking the middle of the summer in the north. The villagers were already up, making sure their crops are alright and going on their daily routines.
In the great city that was called Camelot sat the king of the land. He was called Arthur Pendragon, King Arthur, by all. It was well known that he was just and honorable, and that by his love for peace lay fierceness and strength. He was unwavering and certain, and the people were proud to call him their King.
In that early morning the king was already up. He was on a hill near Camelot, watching the city as it slowly awakens. Looking at the horizon, at his kingdom, the young king smiled.
It was the first time peace has been brought to this land, the first in a long while. It was the first time one man could travel from one place to another in any way he wanted, the first time one from one part of the land could help one from another. And Arthur was proud of that.
As if he could read his thoughts, the young man behind him spoke. "It's all thanks to you," He said quietly, as if not wanting to ruin the moment.
Arthur didn't turn back. From the corner of his eye he could see Merlin, the only other man on the hill, stepping forward until he stood next to him. Arthur almost smiled again. He had a feeling his friend would follow him, as he always did.
"Is it?" He asked, just as quietly. Even after all this time, after everything he's done, he still had his doubts, doubts he could share with none but the two closest to him- his friend and counsellor, Merlin, and his wife, Guinevere.
"Yes," Merlin's voice was almost hoarse with emotions. "You have brought peace to this torn land. You have cured its wounds and allowed all people, no matter who or what they are, to live here without fear. You are just and fair and the people are grateful for it. For all that you've done."
Arthur looked forward in silence, his friend's words echoing in his mind. It was true. The land was more beautiful than Arthur has ever seen it. No harm has come to his people. Nothing could. They were happy to live there, and he was happy that they were happy.
"You truly are the greatest King this land has ever known," Merlin's voice was soft. "The Once and Future King."
Arthur turned around, looking at the dark haired young man who was standing next to him. "Thank you, Merlin," He said for having a friend like Merlin. Merlin just smiled and left, knowing Arthur wanted to be alone. The young King watched him leave before turning back to his city, the great Camelot.
And Arthur smiled again, for he knew Merlin was right. It indeed was thanks to him. He really was the Once and Future King.

It'd seem I love writing for Arthur. It's truly great, especially when I get to write Arthur/Merlin friendship.
So, what did you think?
