"Psst. Hey, blondie. Over here."
The stranger calls me over. Panic. My heart starts pounding.
'Does he know? He couldn't possibly see it. Could he?'
An eternity in a moment passes.
"It's ok. You can trust me. I know what you are."
We are in a park, in broad daylight. I used to be a night owl. Since my mutation, that can no longer be. I have a halo. Light radiates from me. In strong light, it's almost impossible to see it, so I favour the outdoors, in the open. It's my camouflage. I hide in broad daylight. The funny crooked man wears a long brown trench coat. Suddenly I realize he's got to be trying to sell me drugs. This is after all, New York.
"I doubt you know half what you think."
I walk on past.
"Mutant." he whispers the word.
I whirl around, but he's gone, and what's left is a puff of acrid blue smoke. Now the panic really sets in. I start to look for him. I can see anything and that's no exaggeration. I can see the feet of the people on the other side of the world. I can count their nose hairs. I can see all things, through things, in every direction, for any distance. There was a time this nearly drove me mad. Before I found my Sensei.
I spy him, at last. North of here.
'I can't believe I never saw this before... and so close to me all along.'
A school. A school for the 'gifted'. He must have known I would follow him. Maybe this is a trap, some kind of setup. I've been without a friend for so long. The new hope of finding a home erases my care for my safety. I will risk it.
I hope they can accept me, or end this stunted life.
Is that a jet? 0.o
