The first thing he'd felt had been pressure. Then there had been pain, terrible pain that pinned him and crushed the pain from his lungs. His existence had wanted to fade from black again, until he had heard her voice.

Saya…

She had been screaming after him, crying out with her thoughts. He'd wanted to answer her, to free himself and go to her, and he had tried. He had tried so hard. Then he couldn't feel again, and his thoughts had turned frayed and then stopped.

When he woke again, he could no longer hear her. It had taken hours, maybe even a day, and then he finally had touched her. She was sleeping. He had wanted to weep and sigh in relief all at once; Saya was safe, but she was not living. How could she live for herself, experience life as she deserved, if she were asleep once more?

Exertion made him tired, made the cotton return to his thoughts. But he could hear large things moving above him, mechanical things, and he knew he had to escape the rubble of the balcony before they found him.

Fresh, cool breeze danced over him, blowing his unrestrained hair around him. He sat wearily, letting the wind caress him. He was still hurt, but he would heal soon. The balcony had all but obliterated him, crushing most of his body into mere centimeters of space between stone. It had hurt….

He opened his eyes, looking out into the night. The moon was high and full, the sky clear in the cold dark. He wanted to sleep himself, rest for awhile… but there was one last thing he must do for Saya.

Kneeling before the mausoleum where Saya rested, he placed the rose delicately on the single stone step. He had found his hair ribbon, the royal blue one that Saya had loved most. He had tied it around the slender stem before the bloom, careful of the white petals. A white rose this time; perhaps to symbolize Saya's freedom, now that Diva was dead?

Someone was walking behind him, pausing. He turned to look, surprised slightly to see Kai and Riku.

"Haji?" Riku asked uncertainly- strange, since Riku was dead…

Saya's family… he would watch over them he decided, until she woke and could join them once more. Until he could see her laugh and smile once more. Even if Riku was now beyond his help, perhaps not needing it now. Even if he knew Kai still harbored dislike for him. He would watch over them, until Saya awoke.

He felt himself smile, then he leapt up into the night, disappearing from their sight. Yes, he would watch over them just as he would Saya's resting place. He would stay with them until the end of time.
