Magical Theory and the Study Of

Ava Lovegood - Head of Department of Spell Research and Design

Creatures, species of beings, both Magical and Non-magical, are not a comprehendible idea. Every being in existence holds Magic in their very core: in their 'soul.' Some are born with the genes to control, manipulate, and utilize the Magic in their core.

Muggle scientists have discovered a way to track the traits that appear in any biotic organism (living thing).

Every single biotic organism has a genotype, or several genotypes, each one of them representing a trait. Being Magic-able is a trait that is passed down from our parents to us, and to our parents from their parents and etcetera.

This happens in two ways. To be Magic-able, one must first have a full blood type. Meaning, they must have two, for example, large I's, each with a little m in its upper right corner. That is one of the qualifications to be Magic-able.

In this sense, anyone who is Magic-able, be them born to Muggles or Wizards, is a pureblood. If those who fight against admitting Muggleborn children to Wizarding schools, because they are not the so called 'pureblood,' then they might wish to change the term 'pureblood' to 'puregene.'

The second factor in being Magic-able is the genotype. For an individual to be Magic-able, they must have a genotype of, at the very least, Gg, which is heterozygous dominant. The ideal for any 'pureblood' Wizard is to have homozygous dominant genotype of GG, meaning that they have no chance whatsoever, given that they have married someone with the same genotype and same blood type, of having offspring with the non-Magic-able gene.

For a Muggle-born to occur, both parents carry a blood genotype of, at the least, Imim, if not the ImIm combination. Then, from there, the parents must also have a genotype for Magic-able of Gg. The chance that two people who have a child that receives the full ability to use magic is one out of four. The other possible combinations, using the Muggle Punnet Square, are just carriers of some Magic-able traits.

A Squib, someone born to Magic-able parents, but without the ability to perform magic themselves, is also part of genetics. The parents of a Squib must both contain the genotype Gg, but they will still retain the ImIm blood genotype.

It is very rare to find a Witch or Wizard in these ages with a homozygous dominant ImImGG, which would be a full Magic-able person. It is also just as rare to find someone who is full Muggle. Their genotype would be imimgg. In this day and age, most are heterozygous for either of those genotypes.

The reason as to why Squibs can sense Magic more than Muggles is still up for debate. It has been proposed that perhaps since they grew up round magic, and are therefore more familiar with it, they have a higher sensibility to detect it.

This begs the question that maybe, if the Wizarding world revealed themselves to the Muggle one if we could coexist better than we do now, or better than most believe us able to do.

A/N: This is a passage from a fic that is currently in WIP mode. In this part of the fic, Luna is reading a book written by her mother. It is set after OotP, summer. This is just a passage from that book, and I have no idea if I will include any more into the actual fic, and if I do, I will add it to this. But, as I've said, I am unsure of if I am going to do that at this point in time.

Please review if you read. I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks.

Cheers,
