A/N: I've been wanting to do a Mauraders-era story for a while now, and during study hall today I finally got something of an idea. Here it is! Reviews are greatly appreciated! Hope you enjoy!

Prologue

"It's hard to find something lost, but even harder to find something that's right in front of your eyes."

James had thought about her words quite a lot. The sentence, initially, made no sense whatsoever. Of course, that was often the way of Lily Evans.

He wanted to ask her, to confront her and question the meaning behind this statement of hers, but he couldn't. He was too late.

He should've asked her yesterday, when everything was still fine. He should've asked her last week, when they were shopping together at the local grocer. He should've asked her a year ago, when they were visiting his family. He should've asked her five years ago, when he first heard her say it.

Too late, he supposed. Too late to do anything. To ask, to answer, to laugh, to cry.

To live.

"It's hard to find something lost, but even harder to find something that's right in front of your eyes."

He ran through her words as he was confronted with his opponent's wand. He surely understood what was right in front of his eyes now, but it was something he didn't want to find. That didn't mean that he couldn't, though.

Maybe he never would know what she meant when she said this. Maybe she didn't know herself, and it was just another sentence that shouldn't have been said in the first place. Whatever the reason, James Potter wished he knew.

But it was too late now.
