A/N: Honestly, I am rather annoyed with how long it took me to get to this point. I hadn't expected to rewrite and restart this so many times. This was a pain to get going and updates will probably once every two months because I am really having a lot of trouble getting both the motivation and time to do this.

Not that I don't love writing this, it just that this is daunting monster of a story, I'm really proud of how it's developing, and I desperately want to insure every chapter is as perfect as I can get it before posting.

Monsters

It all started with the smell of burning flesh and the tormented cries of agony.

He had always hated corporal punishment.

The Uzumaki: torturous, murderous, beasts, who viewed the sent of blood and screams of pain as necessity, for, to them, such things were sacred- let it never be said that clan's moniker was not earned.

Only monsters could enjoy such a sight.

They were all sick, twisted, Haku Matsumoto knew this, and yet he had his orders. Find a child and take it, if the opportunity arises. It was just his luck that a girl, all by her self, ran from the crowd and to empty alley way.

Red hair, violet eyes- a child probably no older than ten.

Still, he wondered, why she was here? Why was she, an Uzumaki not partaking in the sick parade of violence like the rest of her kinsman?

She opened her mouth and muttered something softly.

But Haku, having been trained well and realizing the wonderful opportunity in front of him, brushed all thoughts aside.

He creeped up behind the weeping girl, and, just as he had been trained to, he pulled her into an ironclad grip.

Placing a chloroform soaked cloth over her noise and mouth, he held her until she stopped struggling.

Hours later as he leaped to the trees, the girl in a sack Haku had hung across his back, he suddenly recalled her softly whispered question:

"Am I a monster?"

Yes- a beast and unworthy of the power crawling through your veins. Haku glowered at path in front of him. Why is it that such crass creatures were gifted with such power? Why can't the noble ninja of my home be blessed with such capabilities?
