They are standing in front of the diner brilliantly named Marty's American Diner when he tells her.
" Im Leaving" he says to her, trying to make his voice devoid of any emotion. "Im taking the car and leaving, you are not to follow me, track me , or ever contact me again". She smiles at him, amusement dancing on her face. She thinks this is a game.
"Is that so". She mocks his cold, methodical words with a swift kiss. He hates this. He hates playing this game with her, with himself. He hates what she does to him and the power she has over him. Most of all, he hates himself for the danger he put her in by being around him.
Its hard, but he manages to turn and walk away. He barely manages not to give in to his desire to return the kiss she selfishly gave him.
"Don't forget the keys" she sneers at him. Her voice is angry, bitter, a sharp difference from the one she talked with before, filled with love, compassion and just a touch of humor.
He ignores the lump in the back of his throat and continues his journey to the car they had previously arrived in. He doesn't forget the keys, and uses them to start the car. He allows himself a glance at her from the rearview mirror. she standing right behind the car with her arms crossed, and a smirk playing across her face. She's too brave, it'll be the death of her one day.
2 seconds later, he speds off onto the dirt road that led them to the diner, and is now leading him away from her. The lump in his throat is still there. It is only 7 minutes later, when he returns back to her, when it finally goes down.
He takes another look into the rearview mirror; she's not there. She is instead, opening the door and crawling into the seat beside him, flashing him a triumphant smile and a kiss on the cheek.
Halfway down the road she says to him'- "its a 20 minute ride to and from the town jason, how'd you get here so quickly".
He doesn't answer.
