A/N: This first came to mind when I was reading the online handbook concerning roommates for the college I'm going to in the fall. The italicized words are the exact words. I did not add any or extract any. I also do not own any rights whatsoever to "Wicked" and all related characters.
The first day at Shiz University. Galinda had still not fully taken in the idea of having a green girl as a roommate. She glanced over at Elphaba. "How did I get myself into this?" she kept asking herself over and over.
Elphaba had just finished making her bed and unpacking. Looking over at Galinda, she tried to figure out how she was going to make the next ten months with this girl less painful.
The two looked at each other. Neither had the slightest idea what to say to the other or what to do. Instead, each sat on their beds and began to read the Student Handbook they were given earlier.
Most of the material were rather boring. Mainly, rules of conduct, curfew, school polices regarding whatever. For the majority of the time, they skimmed through the text and would sneak a peek at the person in the other bed.
Eventually, they came to the section of roommates.
Roommates - Who Needs Them? was the title in big letters.
"Who cares?" both thought, "Certainly not me."
The title was shortly followed by You do! Your roommate is an important part of your life on the Shiz campus.
"Not if I have anything to do with it" Galinda narrowed her eyes.
"You have got to be kidding" was Elphaba's only response.
You will share many things with your roomie during the coming months: thoughts, laughter, feelings, homework, tears, toothpaste, class notes, and most important... pizza at the oddest hours.
"Share?" Elphaba's eyebrows raised, "She puts new meaning to 'blonde'. I don't want any of that on me!"
"The only thing we will be sharing are feelings—" Galinda eyed Elphaba, "the same feelings we are sharing now."
Your roommate is not your maid or chauffer.
"Darn!" Galinda frowned.
We hope, though, that your roommate will become your friend.
Both looked at the other and exchanged glances, "Hope all you want, that's not going to happen."
Students come from a variety of backgrounds and each has an exciting life to share.
"Undoubtedly." both grinned, "She can keep it all to herself."
Roommates must share the burden of living together.
"...and what a burden!"
Compromises must be struck that are fair to all parties. Sharing responsibilities will help keep relationships possible and growing.
"Don't bother," both thought as their eyes narrowed, "I'll be responsible for myself. As for a relationship, that's not going to happen."
Keep in mind there is no such thing as a perfect roommate.
A smile came to both Galinda's and Elphaba's faces, "That's for sure!"
Both girls continued reading the handbook. Neither felt they were prepared for what the next ten months had instore for them. Whatever happened, they knew that none of what the handbook said about relationships would ever happen. But only time can truely tell...
