Hey guys!
First off, I just wanted to thank everyone for all the reviews, story favorites, author favorites, and story alerts. You are all so fabulous and wonderful, and push me to continually become a better writer.
This is loosely based off Jon McLaughlin's song "Human", and is set after "Big Nickel."
As always, please review, I live for them! Hope you all enjoy! xx
Andy couldn't figure out how she had gotten into this situation.
As if being a cop wasn't hard enough, with seeing the worst of humanity day after day, she had to struggle with her own internal, human, instincts. Like love, for example.
Did she love Luke? No. She cared for him, that much she was sure of, but how did she care for him? When she thought of the blond, handsome detective, the thoughts of dependable, reliable, and hard-working came to mind. Like a used car. Or a friend.
Did she love Sam? No. She cared for him, that much she was sure of, but how did she care for him? When she thought of the dark, mysterious cop, the thoughts of loyal, just, and trust-worthy came to mind. That last one packed a punch. Because she didn't give her trust away freely. To be perfectly honest, she didn't trust Luke, not in the way she trusted Sam.
And other thoughts came to mind at the name of Sam Swarek. Other thoughts that she no business entertaining while she had a steady boyfriend. Or about her training officer.
But after all, she was only human.
The heart wants what it wants, McNally. Who had said that to her? Dov, probably - he was always thinking up cheesy sayings like that. But it was true. She knew what her heart wanted, and it wasn't Luke.
It was Sam.
And so she fought her feelings for him, because she was wise enough to know that men like him left a trail of broken hearts behind them. And she didn't want to be another casualty, another notch in his belt.
But deep down, she knew that view of him was false. After all they had gone through together, she had come to realize that Sam wasn't going to break her heart. If anything, she was going to break her own heart, because she could only pretend with Luke for so long.
After today, with the escape of the prisoner and the subsequent recapture of him, Andy finally figured out why she couldn't get Sam off of her mind. Between the diner, his corny jokes, him patching up her leg, and the extremely personal story of his sister that he chose to share with her, she let herself accept the obvious fact.
He was so right for her, in every way. And she wanted him...all of him.
But she was stubborn. Too stubborn for her own good, as her father used to say. So she would stay with Luke, because he was safe, dependable. Even if his kisses didn't ignite a fire within her. Even if when she looked at him, the only word that came to mind was friend. She would stay with him, because. Just because.
But that didn't mean that she wouldn't dream about her training officer, wouldn't imagine what it would be like to be in his arms again, even though she knew it was a horrible trick she was playing on Luke.
Because after all, she was only human.
