Kevin rolled the silver coin through his fingers expertly. It was a skill he had perfected by in his homeless days, back when he had often manipulated the arcade games to spew their tokens. In return for their parents' change, Kevin would give boys and girls his age double the amount of tokens they would normally receive.
He wasn't exactly proud of what he'd done. Far from it.
But he had been forgiven by others, and he'd forgiven himself. He'd prayed to his father's saints, the gods of the Osmosian religion, as well as to the Christian one of his mother. Not that he believed in either of those religions. He simply respected them.
Kevin stared at the silver coin in his palm, resisting the urge to look up.
But he did, morbid fascination getting the better of him. His mother's hanging corpse swayed in some invisible wind in her closet where she had committed suicide. He didn't know what to do, so he resumed his game with the silver coin.
