Oneshot of what's going on in Jack's head as he's informed that Rose is alive in the DocWho episode Utopia.

Martha helped to steady Jack as he stood up from his latest way of dying: hanging onto the TARDIS as it swerved wildly in the time vortex. He steadied himself and locked eyes with the Doctor, daring him not to look away. Although, all things considered, the Time Lord was not afraid of Jack, nor repulsed by him. It was just the fact that that he was a fact that unnerved the Doctor.

"Doctor," Jack acknowledged.

"Captain."

"Good to see you."

"And you." The Time Lord scrunched up his face. "Although… Have you had work done?"

Jack stared back. "You can talk!" he exclaimed.

It took a while for the Doctor to understand before nodding and saying, "Oh the face. Regeneration! How did you know this was me?"

"Well the police box kind of gives it away," Jack pointed out before turning deadly serious. "I've been following you for a long time. You abandoned me." There it was. The short, concise accusation.

"Did I?" the Doctor responded passively. "Busy life. Moving on."

Jack mentally sighed at the lack of answers he was getting. "Just got to ask," he said, the question burning in his mouth. "The Battle at Canary Wharf." Instantly, the captain could see his Time Lord friend regard him with some interest. "I saw the list of the dead. I-it said Rose Tyler."

"Oh no. Sorry!" the Doctor's face lit up. "She's alive!"

"You're kidding!" Jack exclaimed in genuine surprise.

"Parallel world, safe and sound. And Mickey, and her mother!"

"Oh yes!" Jack thanked, breaking out into a huge smile. He embraced the Time Lord as they both laughed at the (somewhat) good fortune of the girl who had changed both of them.

And Jack was relieved, as if the weight of the universe had been taken off his shoulders. So relieved, so relaxed, even at the end of the universe. Why? Because of the simple reason of one person being alive.

That meant one less person died as he lived forever. At least... for now.
