Once you have gotten used to waking up with a kiss and a quiet but sweet "good morning", it will throw you off when all you get is a shake of the shoulders and a "wake up".
My eyes open slowly as I turn onto my back and look up at the ceiling. I can hear Eugene fumbling around the room and it is quite annoying.
"What on earth are you doing Eugene?"
"Nothing..." He replies quickly and continues searching through the room.
"Well obviously you are doing something." I sit up and put my arms around my knees. He doesn't reply and he looks scared and nervous. "Eugene?" I say softly. I get out of bed and walk over, putting both my hands on the side of his face. "What is wrong?"
He looks away as if he doesn't want to talk to me. Then, he pulls away, sitting on the side of the bed. I sit next to him and put my hand on his back.
"Promise me you won't get mad." He says looking up at me.
"I promise. What's going on?"
"I...I got up this morning and went into the bathroom to take a shower and when I got out...I went over to the tray where we left our rings last night." He looks away from me. I can tell he is worried about something. What could have happened? I put me hand on his cheek and he looks back.
"What about the rings?"
"Mine isn't there anymore."
My mind goes blank when he tells me this. Where could his ring be? I saw them both before we went to bed. I was sure of it.
"Well why are you looking in here when they were in the bathroom?" I get up and walk to the bathroom, finding the room in disarray. I look back at him and he puts his hand on his forehead in frustration. "It's okay. We will find it."
I walk into the room and start searching by the tray. I grab my ring and slide it onto the appropriate finger so it won't get misplaced. Eugene sits on the side of the tub and stares at me.
"Rapunzel, it's no use. I've looked all over and I haven't found it."
"Maybe you just didn't see it."
"What a great way to ruin our honeymoon." He mumbles to himself before putting his face in his hands. I look over at him and decide to keep looking. It has to be here somewhere.
I look behind and under everything on the counter, in the sink, in the drawers and the medicine cabinet. I scan over the floor for anything silver and shiny. I dig through the very little bit of things in the trash can. I look behind the toilet and under the rug.
Nothing.
I bite my lip as I look around the rest of the bathroom. I open the door of the shower and scan the floor. It's not there. Behind the door. In the bathtub. I look at Eugene, still sitting on the edge of the tub. Then I see both our shoes underneath the tray. I kneel down and shake all of them. When I get to the last shoe, Eugene's boot, I can only think 'Please, Please, Please be in there.' I tilt the boot upside down with my hand under it. His ring falls into my hand and I laugh at my find. Eugene looks up and sees that I have found it.
"Oh Rapunzel! What would I do without you?" He takes the ring and slides it onto his finger. "Thank you sweetheart."
"You are very welcome." He bends down to kiss my lips. I pull away and look into the bedroom. "I would appreciate if you picked up all our stuff while I clean up in here."
He laughs at my seriousness. "Alright."
I watch him walk into the bedroom and start to clean up his mess. He shoots me a quick smile before I turn around to the mess in front of me with a smile on my face.
