"Anna never smiles," Manta remarked, trying to sound casual in the summer heat as he fished for a reaction from the shaman sprawled on the grass beside him.
There wasn't any reaction to be had, really, just the slight raising of one eye to note that the shorter boy had indeed spoken. After a few moments Yoh went back to the customary state of semi-sleep he slipped into whenever he wasn't running about on Anna's whims.
This lasted not very long at all, as he was interrupted with a jab in the shoulder, not hard enough to be much more than annoying, but a signal that an answer was expected all the same. Yoh opened his eyes completely and gave his friend a quizzical look; what could one possibly say to a fact?
Manta gave an exasperated sigh and stopped going about the question; Yoh did much better when things were laid out for him. "Doesn't it bother you?"
It sounded something like a trick question, and Yoh's befuddled expression grew worse. "Should it?"
"Well...I...she never smiles! And you always do. Shouldn't that worry you?" Manta rolled his eyes, leaning forward to brush leaves from the tops of his new shoes.
"Nah. Just because Anna doesn't smile, doesn't mean she isn't happy." Yoh leaned back with a yawn and one of his easy smiles, eyes fluttering shut. "See?"
The last remark seemed odd, and Manta turned to glance at the house; he saw nothing but Anna reading at the table on the porch.
It occured to him only then that she'd been there for at least an hour now, and Yoh hadn't yet been sent back to training.
