Chapter 1

Derek found himself at the driver's wheel, sitting next to Emily. The pair was on their way to talk to a witness in the kidnapping of an eight-year old little girl. The team was taking this case hard - Jack was now nine and Henry not far behind. Derek had almost never seen Hotch so motivated to solve a case in a while. When it was kids it always felt different. The innocence that was being stripped away from a childhood took a heavy toll on their hearts.

"So, Adam Jacobs, fifty-two. Reported to police that he saw a 'young, black man walking away with a little girl from the park where she was playing with her mom'" Emily said, her mind immediately flashing back to the multiple times she took Henry or Jack to the park and making a mental note to never let her eyes wander from the boys. "You think he's telling the truth?"

"You think he's lying?"

Emily shrugged. "Why didn't he report sooner?" Emily closed the file and turned her gaze to the houses and trees passing by. "I just think there's more to it."

"I guess we'll find out soon." Derek said as he pulled into the driveway of a small, red-brick home. "We're here."

"Um, sir, there's something you need to see," Garcia said, "The security cams from a cafe across the street caught Amber Whitson leaving the park—"

"Does it show who she's with?" Rossi asked.

"That's the thing, the man isn't African American." She said, sending the footage to their tablets, "It's an older white man."

"So Jacobs lied." Hotch said. Concern for the wellbeing of his two agents started building up in his chest, the kind that brought a subtle pressure and butterflies to his stomach. "Anything else, Garcia?"

"No, sir. I sent the footage to your tablets."

"Thanks, Penelope." Dave said.

Hotch hung up the phone and rubbed his forehead. This case was quickly becoming one that would haunt the BAU for years to come.

"Why would Jacobs lie?" Hotch asked.

"Maybe he wanted his thirty seconds of fame." Dave suggested.

Hotch thought it over - it could be as simple as that: a man looking for his thirty seconds of fame on the evening news. Or, he could have sent two of his agents to the unsubs house unknowingly.

"I had Penelope send Jacobs picture to JJ and Reid - maybe Amber's parents will recognize him." Rossi said as he put his phone back into his pocket.

"There's something we're missing." Hotch stood in front of the whiteboard, waiting as if the answers would pop out of the board like a jack-in-the-box.

Hotch's cell began ringing in his pocket and he quickly fished it out. "Hotchner."

"Hotch, I—I did some deep digging, which you may want to just ignore —"

"What'd you find, Penelope?" Hotch said, getting her back on track.

"Adam Jacobs had a daughter. Her birth was never recorded, she practically never existed. There's no records of anything except a death certificate. She was eight."

Hotch swore to himself. Damn it. "He's our unsub."

"Mr. Jacobs, when did you say you saw Amber Whitson?" Derek asked.

"Oh, well, it was Thursday." He said. "No, no it was Friday. I'm sorry, my days seem to blur together these days."

Derek was standing at the window when Emily's cell rang in her pocket. She quietly excused herself while Derek made small talk, something about the size of Mr. Jacobs yard.

Before she could say anything, Hotch's voice came through, slightly frantic which made her blood race.

"It's him. Jacobs is the unsub."

Emily's blood then went ice cold. Instinctually, she glanced back and saw Mr. Jacobs steal a glance her way. She simply smiled and focused back on Hotch's voice.

"We're ten minutes away."

"Sounds good, Hotch, I'll ask him." She lied.

Before Emily could even turn around, Jacobs snuck his hand into his pocket to grab hidden gun. He fired twice before she ever saw the gun. Derek responded quickly, pulling out his own weapon and fired twice at Jacobs.

But, not before Adam Jacobs was able to fire a third and final time.

Eh? How was it? Should I continue? Let me know in the reviews! :)
