Ryou walked home from his school where he attended as a Jr. High student. It was his final year of middle school before he started high school. As Ryou stepped on the familiar sidewalks of his quiet neighborhood he couldn't help but think about the upcoming changes. High school was fast approaching too fast and soon adulthood would come calling as well. What upset him wasn't the fact things would be changing no it was the fear of the unknown of what those changes might bring. Would he get into a good high school? Would he make friends there? What if he failed? Most importantly would his father be there for any of it at all.
He stopped and paused to recollect his thoughts just around the corner from his home. 'Don't. Thinking that way will do me no good I've asked father to take time from his archeological work for years. It never goes anywhere just forget about that and enjoy his time home now.' As Ryou approached his home he adjusted the books in his hand making it easier for him to grab for the house key in his left pocket. With a jingle from the key and a few firm turns of the doorknob he opened the door to his house.
Empty. Is what came to mind when he saw the inside of his house. Not a single item out of place it was almost like no one lived here at all. The whole house had a coldness to it not in temperature but in a certain absence of love that most homes captured through out there rooms. No messes to clean up very few pictures to be seen two in fact one in his room and another in his father's room. It was like the inhabitants stopped living and only just existed. Yes his house was only a place to exist a cold lifeless structure that lost its warmth the moment when two precious people to him were taken away in a clash of vehicle carnage.
Suddenly the house phone rang from within the kitchen piercing through the silence and giving Ryou a short reprieve from his thoughts.
"Hi father... when will you be coming home?"
He said with a slight anxious tone. His father quickly replied back,
"Hi Ryou I'll be there in about thirty minutes I'm just coming from the airport. Uhh... yeah about not picking you up from school today my flight got delayed so I couldn't make it. No big deal right? I mean you're a teen now you probably would be embarrassed by me picking you up anyway..."
There was a brief silence between the two and Ryou didn't want to be on the phone much longer after that statement. He said with a melancholic tone,
"Yeah... no big deal I'll see you soon. Bye."
He quickly hanged up the phone and went over to the couch clinging to one of the pillows fighting back tears. 'No big deal. Is that how you see it I waited for over a hour for you with no notice that you weren't coming. How about all the other times you broke your promises missing something in my life. Do I mean that little to you? I miss how things use to be when Mom and Amane were alive. Back then I never felt alone like how I do now. I wish I didn't feel so alone-I wish I had someone to be by my side.
He wiped the tears from his eyes and put back the pillow on the couch. Quietly getting one of his school books to keep his mind off things after all it wasn't like his father was any good at comforting him. No mom was much better at that and Amane always knew how to make him smile. Things father was absolutely terrible at doing. Well at least ever since the accident. Time moved along at a steady pace and he found himself at the final page of his school work when he heard the door bell finally ring.
The doorbell rang a few more times. 'I'm not gonna let my hard feelings get in the way of us spending time together. If we end in ruin it will be because he failed as a father.' Ryou opened the house door there he was greeted by the sight of his father a older gentleman about mid fourties sharing the same white hair and smile as his son. Before he could react his father gave him a hug and scruffed up his hair which was met by a pouty face by Ryou. "Not the hair! Do you know hard it is too keep it from sticking up?!"
Mr.Bakura chuckled to that response and released his son from his hold. "Of course I do I gave you that hair!"
Mr.Bakura gave his son a warm smile which Ryou returned. Despite their recent phone conversation Ryou could tell his father was trying and that was enough for him to push passed his feelings.
"How was your trip to Egypt? Did you find anything exciting?" Ryou said genuinely interested in his father's work.
"Yes I did. In Fact, I brought one especially for you."
Ryou looked puzzled but felt excited at the prospect of receiving a gift. His father opened up his suitcase slowly he brought out something circular that had been wrapped up carefully. There was a strange feeling that suddenly washed over Ryou as his father gave the artifact to him he felt like it had belonged to him all his life. He pulled away the covering and a golden glimmer shinned into the light. He gazed upon the item in his possession the object had a circular ring with a triangular pyramid at the center with a all seeing eye. He looked to meet his father gaze.
"It's amazing father! I've never seen anything like this before! Are you saying you're letting me have it?!"
Mr.Bakura gave him a nod and a pat on the back "Absolutely! After all you've said before you were interested in archeology."
Ryou smiled and held the item close to his chest. "Thank you Dad. I won't let you down!"
Mr.Bakura gave him a reassuring nod, "I knew I could count on you. Anyway I have some unpacking to get done and dinner needs to be made why don't you have some fun in your room til dinner is ready."
Ryou headed upstairs with his new gift gently held in his hand. Click. He opened the door to his room and closed it behind him as he turned on the light. The room seemed rather dull for a teen boy's room however he had a few fun things around in his room. Underneath his bed he had several board games and a diarama he was making. On the other side of the room he had a desk where he had his duel monsters cards carefully stored in one of its drawers and on top of the desk was a book of ghost stories.
However Ryou had no interest in any of those things for the item had now took his full and complete attention. He held it up toward the light feeling almost mesmerized by the ancient object and he felt a strange pull to put it on. With careful precision he slide the item's chain around his neck and a bright glowing light soon illuminated the entire room. Ryou was amazed at the sight but that soon turned to fear as the whole room disappeared before his eyes and then thrusted him through the shadows landing in a dark fog covered room.
"Wha-What's going on?! Where am I?!"
Fear and confusion filled his voice as he looked around the cold room consumed in a misty fog. Suddenly a dark laugh could be heard among the shadows.
"Wh-Who's there?!" He looked around in a fearful panic. The laughter stopped and footsteps could be heard behind him Ryou's heartbeat quickened as the steps got closer. There was a dark silhouette of a man standing across from him.
"Took you long enough I've waited a very long time for you my host."
