Disclaimer: I don't own any of the characters used in this story. This is my first attempt at a Jed/Abbey fanfiction, so please be gentle! I wrote it over Easter last year whilst I was on holiday in Europe. The 'present day' part of the story is set during the second season episode "In The Shadow Of Two Gunmen" the only difference being that in my story Josh doesn't get shot.
Memories Of A Happier Time.
Sitting in the private waiting room of GW hospital with the senior staff, Abigail Bartlet waited desperately for news on Jed's condition. She couldn't believe that he had been shot. Not her Jed!
As she sat quietly in the corner, her mind drifted back to a question she had been asked the previous week at a fundraiser. It had been about how she and Jed had met and got together. They had met at a party after being introduced by Leo but the first important date for them as a couple was 4th July 1964; their first kiss and the night that Jed had asked her to go steady.
Flashback- 4th July 1964
It had been a lovely hot, sunny day. It was now getting quite late as Jed and Abbey sat on a bench overlooking the beach where a party was in full swing. They were sharing a beer and a cigarette whilst trying to talk over the loud party music. They had spent the day with Leo and Jenny but they had lost sight of them in the party.
Suddenly, the music quietened down which meant that the fireworks were about to start. Jed took a last drag on the cigarette and Abbey drank the last of the beer before they walked down onto the beach.
The fireworks were brilliant. A couple of minutes into the display, Abbey leaned over and whispered in Jed's ear: "Happy Fourth of July, Jed" before placing a kiss on his lips.
Jed was surprised at first but eagerly deepened the kiss. Tongues danced and their hands roamed over each other's bodies, as the world around them seemed to fade away.
They finally separated a few minutes later and stood grinning inanely at each other. Jed decided to break the silence.
"I guess that kiss means you like me as much as I like you?" he asked.
"Yeah." She replied.
"Well, I'm going to go out on a limb here, but, um, will you be my girlfriend?" he asked with sudden shyness.
"Sure." She answered, pulling him in for another kiss.
----------------
Abbey was pulled out of her reverie by a hand on her shoulder. She looked up to see CJ.
"Abbey, the doctors are here to speak to you." She said.
"Dr Bartlet, I'm Dr Habtree, I treated your husband." Said one of the two men in front of her.
"Is Jed…?" she asked.
"The President is going to be fine, Ma'am, you can go up and see him now, if you like." He replied.
"I'd like that." She answered, getting up.
The doctors lead her out of the waiting room to the ITU room where she would sit and tell Jed for about the millionth time how she loved him so very much and in her mind that would make everything right in the world, even if it was only for a second.
The End.
