I said I wanna touch the earth
I wanna break it in my hands
I wanna grow something wild and unruly
Artemis pressed her palm on the cement ledge of the roof belonging to a single-story building she was currently sitting on. The team was on a stake-out in the middle of Arkansas, but they had been there for almost four hours, and nothing had happened. It was getting dark, but she didn't mind. She breathed in the air of fireflies and cotton.
She pulled her phone out of her quiver. Eight o'clock.
Wally walked over to her from the other side of the roof. He sat down next to the archer. They had been getting along relatively well the past few days.
They stared off into the city twilight as the bustle and congestion of every day life slowly started to drain from the sidewalks. They were on the outskirts of town, and Artemis suddenly felt a longing to run away into that milky twilight, to fling herself into that fading Sun on the horizon and never look back, to taste the purple shadows and touch the edge of the world.
She wanted to submerge herself in the inky, star-speckled sky. She wanted to slide down the curve of the moon and dance from constellation to constellation. She wanted to scoop up a handful of the Sun and keep it in her pocket. She wanted an adventure, she wanted to test the bounds of freedom and never look back.
She stared as the light started to blend into the indigo sky.
Wally gently elbowed her in the ribs, just to be a bother. He never took his eyes off of the sky above them.
Artemis knew everything was as it should be.
Cowboy take me away
Fly this girl as high as you can
Into the wild blue
Set me free oh I pray
Closer to heaven above and closer to you
Closer to you
