I got inspired by a small hill next to a playground. I tried to write something beautiful and sad. Well, I hope it succeeded.
What Will Remain
Two shadows were crawling up on a darkening hill, which slowly turned orange in the setting sun. A crow passed by loudly above them, breaking the silence. There was a small forest a little behind them and a huge, dim, cloud-covered mountain rested in front of their feet. The sound of their steps gently echoed in the valley laying under them. A sudden wind passed by, blowing through their loose, rusty clothing. Everything was so peaceful.
- Hey, Malik. - called one of them softly. The other one hummed, barely audibly and turned his head to face the pale person beside him.
- Have you ever wondered about what will remain after us? - Malik was asked. The short, black haired man turned back to the mountain.
- What do you mean, Altair? - whispered Malik without looking at him, he still gazed at the top of the mountain and the setting sun.
- When we die, everything will change. And as the time passes by, nobody will remember us. They will all forget what we have done, what we have become. - explained Altair calmly. His eyes wandered towards Malik, adoringly scouring his face. He found every single part of it perfect and beautiful. His ears, his nose, his chin, the tiny, black beard, the tousled, brief dark hair and that burning, black pair of eyes.
- Just like our names. - added Malik quietly as he slowly faced the tall, light brown haired man next to him.
- It will all vanish when we come to the end. - Altair's golden eyes sparkled even more in the bright light, like two, small diamonds.
- I never thought of this before. - sighed Malik. He stared down into the deep chasm, which divorced the hill from the mountain.
- Nothing lasts forever. But my love for you is eternal. - Altair softly grabbed Malik's hand. - And I'm not afraid to prove it.
Malik admired those gold eyes. He wasn't the type of person who believed everything he had been told. But right now he didn't have any doubts.
- I know, - he said - and I will always be sure of it.
Altair's eyes strayed towards the mountain, the valley and the now darkening sky, but he didn't let go of that gentle, warm touch of Malik's hand.
- We can never trust anyone anymore. Everything will fall, every friendship ends with betrayal, and every love will grow cold with time. And I don't want to live in this world anymore, with these experiences. - Altair turned back to Malik for the last time. He tightened the hold of Malik's hand. - Are you coming with me?
- Are you going to love me forever?
- I promise.
They slowly turned to face the wide, dark valley deep under them. They didn't move, they didn't say a word, they didn't look at each other anymore. Altair and Malik walked closer to the edge of the green hill. The dark blue sky with the few stars was the only light now in the cold night. No sound, no move, nothing else, just the two of them.
They jumped off the ledge into the huge, deep chase, hand in hand.
Far away from here, an eagle cried out.
