The room was cold. High silver walls dominated her surroundings. She had known this place since birth. She knew it well; every grain, every dent were known to her. Her father visited often; her mother was dead. Her father often told the story. He would tell it over and over again. It had become ingrained into her memory.
"Otera."
The girl turned toward the voice she knew well, that of her father.
"Yes, Father?" She replied.
Seamless doors slid open, a dark figure stood revealed in the doorway. He was tall, but not lanky. His build was that of a man who had been working all his life. His silver hair caught and reflected the outside light, ringing his head in fire. The high-bridged nose that adorned his face gave him a commanding look. His eyes, ice blue, held a smile that matched the smile tugging at his lips. He wore reds and black. A red cloak and shirt with black slacks and polished shoes.
"Are you ready?" he asked.
The girl nodded eagerly. She had been in this room for seventeen years, not able to leave unless she wore a silver helm. Her father told her that it was necessary and for her own good. Secretly, she thought he was making it all up. But that was in the past. Today would be her last day in confinement.
"Good. Shall we?" He held out his arm. The girl took it and was led away from her prison forever.

Otera trudged up the path to a neat white house. Her heavy luggage followed behind, scraping the ground. She was nervous. This was her final year of high school, and she was in a different country. She was an exchange student.
She knocked tentatively on the white washed door. A small robust woman answered.
"Yes?" She surveyed the youth before her.
"I'm Otera, your exchange student." Otera replied, glancing in at the furnishings beyond the door. They were light in color and large. They looked like over-stuffed marshmallows. There was at least one sofa, a love seat and two very large recliners. Otera shifted her gaze back to the small woman.
"Come in," She said. The woman allowed enough space for Otera to squeeze in, but no more. The woman's eyes shifted to every corner of the block before she finally closed the door. "That could have been costly, you know." The woman stated. She sighed and helped Otera with her bags. "My name is Judy. My children all go to Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters. You will meet them tonight. The school is just a mile north of us, so you will have no problems getting to and from school. Timmy may drive you, but he doesn't really like company." Judy ushered her guest up a set of curving stairs and into a small room. "Here you are. I'm sorry it's small, but it's all we have to spare." With that, Judy turned and left Otera to unpack by herself.

"Hurry up! Mom has dinner way done, and you're slowing us down!" Robby yelled from, the back of her older brother's car. "Besides," She added, "That new student was supposed to come. Don't you want to meet her?"
Her brother grumbled something to his group of friends and sauntered over to the car. "Chill out, Robby." He said, issuing forth a small stream of water.
"Hey, Don't cheat, Tim! You know I can't counter something like that!"
Tim shrugged, "Yeah, so?"
Robby sat back and stuck out her tongue, "Play fair!"
Tim chuckled and turned over the engine. Within minutes they could smell baked chicken in their driveway.
