Christmas Wish

"Abby, you need to get down here right away." Susan said on the phone. Abby laughed, "Nice try Susan, I asked for tonight off last month." Abby said. "Abby, it's Carter, you better get down here, and quick." Susan said. "Is he alright?" Abby asked softly. "Abby you know I cant tell you anything on the phone, you should just get down here as fast as you can." Susan said, and hung up the phone. Looking down at her friend she could see the sad looks on everyone's faces as they stared at the heart monitor. He was gone. "Susan call it." Kerry said. "16:01."Susan said softly. Looking at Carter she began to cry, all he had done was run to the flower shop to get Abby a dozen roses for his Christmas present. He didn't even make it out of the flower store's parking lot when a drunk driver hit him. Susan and Kerry stood by the trauma room doors as just about everyone else stood motion less at the front desk. When Abby had arrived they all stared at her with lost looks on their faces.

That was 30 years ago

"Gamma, wake up!" Savannah her eldest granddaughter said gently nudging her gamma awake. Abby smiled, "Im up sweet heart." She said looking at her granddaughter. "Mommy said it is time to eat." Savannah said. Abby nodded and looked over at her daughter Olivia. Standing up Abby picked up her granddaughter, and carried her to the dining room. Setting her down Savannah sat down right next to Olivia's chair. Abby took a seat at the head of the table. Watching everyone take a seat, she looked up at her son-and-law Cosmo, and smiled. When everyone was sitting down at the table Abby looked up at Susan and Chuck, who were sitting at the other end of the table. Olivia and Savannah said grace, and just before everyone began to eat Susan interrupted. "Since we missed thanksgiving this year because of everyone's work schedules, I think she we should go around and say what we are thankful for." She said. Savannah started, "I am thankful for my family." Olivia smiled at her daughter, "Our health." Cosmo laughed, "Same." Susan, Chuck and Abby chuckled, "For the memories of the good times."

After dinner Susan and Abby stepped outside onto the balcony of the Carter family mansion that was located in New York City. "I miss the Chicago winters." Abby said softly. "Yeah, Boston really doesn't compare either." Susan said with a laugh. "I never would have thought how tough it is, to try and be so happy, and my daughter will never understand why." She said. Susan wrapped her arm around Abby's shoulder, "Liv never met John, she never knew him like we did." She said. Abby nodded, "Every year I beg God to let me see him again. Every Christmas morning I wake up empty handed." She said feeling tears well up in her eyes. Watching the snow begin to fall, Abby sighed and hugged Susan, "I miss him too Abby." Susan said softly.
