Claim: Neji and Tenten
Prompt: 036 Smell
Disclaimer: Neji and Tenten do not belong to me.
AN: Another short friendship fic. This was supposed to be a bit longer, but I felt I was overdoing it so I've left it as it is.
That Smell
Neji let out a breath when he saw Tenten sitting at the base of the tree. It appeared that she was checking her weapons and it didn't look like she was going to be moving anytime soon. This was not going to be fun. He was grateful that Lee wasn't there, or Gai, for that matter. They would probably insist that he change out of these clothes and into one of those green jump suits. He let out a sigh and started to walk towards her. He may as well get this over with quickly.
He was a few yards away when Tenten pulled a face and covered her mouth and nose with one hand. She glanced up at him.
"Don't say it," he said, glaring. He knew that the effect would probably be ruined by the fact he also had a hand to his face and he felt like he was about to throw up from the stench that originated from his back.
"What happened?" she asked him. He grabbed his bag from the base of the tree. Tenten gathered up her weapons and moved several feet way.
"That boy from the Inuzuka clan," he said quietly. "He was out for a walk with his dog."
"What?" Tenten gasped. He glanced over his shoulder at her.
"The Inuzuka boy," he said a little louder. She cut him off before he could say the rest.
"I don't want to know any more," Tenten growled at him.
Neji went around the other side of the tree and began to change. There was a large yellow stain on his shirt. He grimaced at it and folded it up. He had no idea whether the stain would fade but he at least hoped that the smell would. He splashed water over his back and cursed himself for being so stupid. He should have dodged when he heard Inuzuka coming. He hadn't, though, he'd just continued to practice and had ended up being sprayed with urine. He grimaced again and pulled the clean shirt over his head.
"Neji! Gai's signalling us!"
He sighed and placed the shirt in his bag. There would be no point in trying to hide it. The stench would probably stick with him all the way back to the Hyuuga compound. He headed around the tree and saw that Gai was indeed signalling them. Their teacher was jumping up and down and waving his arms around from the other end of the training grounds. He also seemed to be shouting, although Neji got the impression that he was trying to be subtle.
"Please don't mention this to anyone," Neji said quietly.
Tenten raised an eyebrow at him and they started walking towards Gai. She still had a hand covering her face, he noticed.
"Mention what?" she replied, "the fact that you let your guard down or the fact that you absolutely stink?"
He knew that she was smiling behind her hand and a glance at her confirmed it. She looked at him and shrugged.
"Okay, I won't say anything," she said, "but you might have a hard time hiding it."
She pointed to far side of the field and he saw the Inuzuka boy smirking at him. Neji sighed and looked at Gai. This day couldn't possibly get any worse, could it?
He was twenty feet away from Gai when his teacher raised a hand to cover his face and turned almost as green as his clothes.
