Tara stood there. She was trying to reassure those around her that they were okay. But were they? She could not tell. She waited, wanting to feel something. She could only feel numb. She saw the man lying on the ground. Something was staining his chest red.
Blood.
She lifted her gun and reached out a tentative finger. She touched the barrel. It was hot.
I shot him.
Sue was moving over, checking the man's vitals and talking on her phone.
I need to call in as well.
Tara dialled the number for Jack, the team leader.
"Hudson."
"Jack..."
"Tara? What's up?"
"I ... I ... there was a ..."
"Tara, are you okay?"
"I shot someone."
"What's the situation?"
Tara went into autopilot, answering questions and giving information, just as her training had prepared her. But inside...that was different.
Very different.
