Sides

People gaped when they kissed in a play, grimaced or snickered.

Their friends say, "It must be awkward!"

Those friends don't really know them.

Things like hugging, touching, kissing.

It was simply another thing they did together.

People, they think kisses are big deals. They think it's something shocking, they think it's gross and wrong.

Sharpay says "I'm an actress. Sacrifices must be made."

Ryan says "I'm an actor. Sometimes you just have to bear with it."

They were lying.

Secretly, they don't care.

Since they were children, Ryan only had Sharpay. Since she tugged at his hair and cried until he did what she wanted, since she made him her most loyal servant.

And despite what people thought, Sharpay also only had Ryan.

At school, people would make faces behind their backs. So Sharpay continued to cling to Troy, because that is what she thought she wanted (and that is how to fool people), and Ryan put on his top hats and stayed a step behind Sharpay, because he was her servant (and he always did what she wanted).

But at home, when they were alone, she clung to him instead, and he was always by her side.

It was nighttime, and she climbed into his bed.

He pulled her to his chest, and she whispered "Good night, Ryan."

He gave her a kiss, softly.

For tonight they could kiss and they'd be side by side, but tomorrow, he'd be one step behind her, and she'd be with Troy.

It was just another thing they did.
