Jane and her brother, Frankie, were in front of their parents' house playing a game of one on one. Jane usually bested her younger brother, but he busted her nose in a bogus move to block her shot. They had to stop the game, and she went to the kitchen to grab a towel to stop the bleeding. Her mother scolded her for rough-housing with her brother. Until her mother, Angela, made a comment about a Crowe calling, she didn't realize that she had missed a work call to go to a crime scene.
She returned the call immediately and took her cruiser to the crime scene. Upon arriving, Crowe gave her the usual shit about being a female detective, something about taking a Midol; she was used to it. She didn't realize that this crime scene was going to hit her hard, reminding her of a past she did everything within her power to forget, and bring her closer to a woman who would change her future.
Jane made her way to the victim, passing her partner, Detective Frost, on the way, who as usual was puking his guts out from the stench of death. He never was suited to homicide. He was too nice; too sensitive. She found her old partner, Korsak and the new medical examiner who was inspecting the body of a man sitting on a couch with his throat slit; blood everywhere. Jane didn't recognize the pattern right away. She didn't realize that this was the work of a man that had nearly ended her career in the Boston Police Force; nearly ended her life.
Instead she took notice of the woman who was dressed for a fashion shoot, but looking at the severed neck of the deceased. Jane didn't realize at the time that they had met her some time before when she was under-cover in the drugs unit as a prostitute. She just knew that when Dr. Maura Isles hazel eyes looked at her broken nose and assessed the damage, that she forgot to stop breathing when Maura place her hands delicately on her chin and nose to pop out the broken cartilage.
