"I saved Caroline," Damon pointed out, staggering to where Elena was helping Stefan stand. She didn't look up until Stefan was on his feet. When she met his eyes, his shift in gaze asked her to shift hers to the blonde vampire picking herself up unassisted across the street. "And I saved Bonnie," he continued, "even though the witch hates me."
Elena was silent, arm against Stefan's.
"And I saved Jeremy," he paused, amending, "although in a less direct fashion." He absently wiped a bloody palm on his bloodier jeans. "You can't possibly hate me now."
Stefan flinched.
Elena stepped forward to meet the wounded vampire, tilting her chin up at him. "Thank you, Damon." As Damon began to smile, she turned from him, took Stefan's hand, and walked away.
