Sound of the Bells

11:18 pm. SPOILERS, unless you've finished the series. If you haven't finished it, close the window now. It also helps to have watched L: Change The WorLd, even though the timeline is taken from the manga/anime, but if you haven't seen the films, it won't spoil it for you.

DN obviously, various POVs. NOT yaoi, no OCs, can't think of any more abbreviations... So yeah. The story takes place just after L's death, before Light gets his own place. It's a little slow I s'pose, but meh, whatever. It'll get interesting soon enough. ;) Hope you enjoy reading! Please feel free to review or send opinions by PM, constructive criticism is always welcome.

Summary: Without giving too much away, a series of coded messages have been left by L before his death, and it is up to two opposing characters to solve them. The prologue doesn't advance the plot, but merely sets the scene, just to pre-empt any criticism of that. ;) So stick with it, you'll see how the story progresses.

It's actually completed, but will update gradually – although it might seem a bit random, there is a point to the intervals between updates; it's a bit of an easter egg really. Brownie points to anyone who can work it out. It'll be every day though, I can grant you that. The first chapter is just the prologue, which is why it's short. The other chapters are generally twice as long as these notes and the prologue combined, so don't worry.

I don't own Death Note or any related items. It rocks too much for that.

Prologue.

The monitor flared up with the fragile face of his mentor, for the first time unsmiling, his eyes clouded with fear. There was nothing more that could be done for him. Of the small crowd gathered, most gasped in shock, whilst hot tears shamefully pricked the eyes of others. One smiled inwardly at the good work he had done. Yet another was going through personal hell, his hands shaking, blood draining from his extremities. His vision began to blur.

'Wa-Watari!' The room was spinning around, defying physics in order to mock him. Alone… so alone… Things seemed to speed up and slow down simultaneously, and he could only just about sense the people moving around him. No matter where he looked, he saw the gentle, lined face, at once cordial and nostalgic, kindly and intelligent, filling his vision and gasping for air. It was contorted in pain, not even a shadow of what it used to be. He tried to shut it out, but it refused. It was like a dream… no… like some sadistic, intolerable nightmare. He felt as if he was no longer in control of his own body, as his mind screamed but no sound came out through his throat. This was not according to his plan. This was never, ever meant to happen… people were shouting, panicking, he could hear them. Grey, black, white… too colourful… the noises, too loud… surely the world should have stopped, for such a moment?

'Everyone, the shini-' His sentence was never finished. For what seemed like forever, he fell. This wasn't meant to happen. Watari… I'm sorry…

Through the insane, screaming, spinning world around him, through the myriad of colours that seemed far too bright, far too harsh, through the gaping black holes in his vision, he saw him.

It's time... isn't it?

Slowly, with the grace of feathers gently floating towards the earth, his eyelids closed. He was still.

Calm.
