AN: a little Blue Exorcist one-shot that will hopefully pull me out of my writer's block funk. Inspired by Rin's little head roll he does when he unsheaths his sword in the anime.
Disclaimer: I do not own Blue Exorcist. I am making no profit from this work.
Rin Okumura sat alone on the roof of the dorm he shared with his brother, the darkness of night surrounding him. He glanced down at the sword laying across his lap and let his fingers ghost over the sheath. This sword was the only thing keeping his demonic powers in check. And now the sword was damaged. His power was becoming too much for the blade to fully contain. Every time Rin fought now it was with the fear that each blow might be the one to extend the crack in the blade and destroy it, allowing his full demonic energy to have free reign.
Rin sighed and stood up, sword in hand and jumped from the roof towards the surrounding wood, unafraid of the drop. He landed safely and took off for the clearing that he had been frequenting. He glanced around to make sure that no one was around to see him and he grasped the hilt of his sword with his right hand. He hesitated. No one was meant to know about his power and every time he fought he risked exposing his secret, but Rin had realized something that he could no longer deny to himself. He took a deep breath and in one smooth movement removed the sword from its sheath.
Rin let his head roll on his shoulders with a soft moan as the power flooded through him. He could see the glaring blue light of Satan's flame even through his closed lids but he didn't care right now if anyone else saw. This power, his demonic power, was intoxicating and he was constantly yearning for another taste. He had been terrified at first, but it didn't take long for him to become accustomed to the rush of energy that flooded his body and made him feel so strong, so….alive. He hadn't realized it before, but for years he had felt heavy, repressed, like something was constantly weighing him down. But when he unleashed his demonic power all of that was lifted and he felt amazing, like he could take on the world. He had become addicted to these little tastes of the power that slept within him. There were times when he was ashamed of these moments that he stole, high on his own power and enjoying every second of it. Other times he was frustrated and bitter that he constantly had to repress a part of himself for the sake of making everyone else happy. Furious that they dared deny him his birthright and force him to go without this power that belonged to him just because they were frightened of it.
Right now was one of those moments that the felt slightly ashamed of himself. Everyone was trying so hard to keep his secret and keep him safe from other demons who would want to kill him or kidnap him and take him to his father and here he was basically lighting up a sign that said "SON OF SATAN, HERE I AM, COME AND GET ME". With a frustrated and somewhat guilty groan, Rin slid the sword back into the sheath, banishing the blue flames and his rush of power with it. He sighed and leaned his head back to gaze at the stars. He felt so heavy again, the weight of the magical suppression of his power settling once again. He strapped the sword to his back and started walking back toward the dorm. He had decided a while ago that if Yukio every caught him without the seal he'd just say he was trying to let some of the stress off of the blade so it would be less likely to break in a fight.
'Like he'd even believe me...' Rin thought sullenly, already missing the feeling of power rushing through his veins and yearning for just one more taste as he faded into the thickening darkness.
