All the way to church with her father Edith was worrying. She couldn't believe this was finally happening. She had been daydreaming about marrying Sir Anthony for the last six years, and now...now she was sitting in the carriage with her father, dressed in the most beautiful wedding gown she had ever seen, and with a veil and the old Grantham tiara on her head.

Was this just a dream? Would she wake up soon?

She really felt beautiful, though her father hadn't showed much enthusiasm when she came down the stairs. Well, she knew he was against this marriage. And she knew she wasn't his favourite, anyway.

She hoped Anthony would like her dress though, she knew he usually noticed what she was wearing. And on a day like this - he was sure to notice.

Would Anthony really be there, when she got to church? Or had someone or other of her relatives managed to chase him away again? She knew she shouldn't even be thinking such a thought. What other bride had to worry about a thing like that on her wedding day?

Her father noticed how worried she looked.

"Do you have regrets?" he asked her with a frown.

"Of course not! I'm just afraid something might go wrong", she answered without hesitation.

After a few moments of thought she added: "This is the best thing I have ever done. I have never been so sure about anything before."

They didn't speak more until they got to the church. So she had time to think. How nice it would be to live with someone who noticed her. She didn't melt into the furniture for Anthony, he really cared about her. He enjoyed talking to her, enjoyed listening to her. And she wasn't plain Edith to him, she was beautiful Edith. Lovely Edith.

...

She saw Anthony at once as she stepped into the church. And all her worries dissolved. He was standing at the altar, with his back towards her. He was taller than all other men, it was impossible not to notice him. Of course he was there! How could she have doubted him!

...

Sir Anthony turned from the altar to the aisle to welcome his bride. He was overwhelmed when he saw her. Never had he seen anything more beautiful!

She was wearing the most wonderful wedding gown. It showed her slim frame in a very enticing way. He had a quick flash of what she might look like with it all taken off. Maybe a natural thought on one's wedding day, but not a very proper thing to think in church, though. So he let the thought drop, while he waited for her to come nearer.

"You are so beautiful, my darling", he said as a greeting. "So very, very beautiful."

She looked up at him and smiled. She was happy.
