I Am Done Pretending

They'd only been together a short time. It was hard work for both of them to overcome their fear of being hurt. He's been married four times, each ending in tragedy or in use of sports equipment to cause bodily harm. She'd had more than her fair share of failed romances as well, including an almost wedding when she had been in law school. Despite the odds, they'd come together, not only professionally, although that had happened first, but romantically as well. Their co-workers called it inevitable, because the two set of sparks whenever they were in a room together. Both had such strong personalities though, and that was bound to cause a few bumps in their relationship. Their first big fight had almost destroyed them. She refused to budge on the issue and so did he. He was so afraid of losing her though, that he started to shut down, to shut her out. She avoided using sports equipment to get through to him, but being a profiler, used the mental equivalent. She went to her best friends house and stayed the night, to give them time to cool off. He showed up at the door at three in the morning. Abby answered it and held the door open for him to enter. Kate was still awake. She was standing just behind Abby. The younger woman discreetly gave them the living room to work things out.

"I'm done pretending that I can live without you. I love you, Katie." Gibbs said immediately.

"Good, because I love you too, Jethro." She answered.

"This changes everything between us, though."

"Love remains the same." Was her only reply.
