Chapter 1

Present

"Kaitoo!"

A feminine voice rang throughout the house and echoed off the hard wood floors.

"Yes, Kaiko?" Kaito answered in a reluctant tone.

"There's something at the door for you! It has a lot of labels on it which probably means it's important!" She added a snicker at the end.

Kaito pulled himself away from the graphic horror movie he was watching to get the door. The movie was revolting. A girl was so in love with her past lover that she cut her own ears off and sent them to him so that "he could always have someone to talk to". Kaito hated movies like this, mainly because situations like this scared him.

As Kaito approached the door, he noticed through the thick glass that the box was about knee height and looked pretty wide. The box was also covered in large orange stickers labeled with things like, "Enjoy!" and "Precious Cargo!". Kaito hoped it would have been a present from his dad, whom he hadn't seen in a while. Kaito turned the cold brass lock of the door, pressed down on the handle, and pulled open the door.

Thick strands of pink hair? fur? stuck out from all sides of the box. When Kaito went to pick it up something bounced around inside, like it didn't completely fill the box. Kaito was anxious to see what was inside and pried open the box right on his front porch.

As he peeled back the cardboard surface he noticed the smell of the "cargo" in the box. It smelled of wilted flowers. The pink hair became thicker and more tangled looking. Kaito noticed there was something underneath. He worked his fingers through the tough knots and pulled back each individual clump of hair. When he got to around the fourth clump he noticed something wrong. There was something dead underneath it. He could just feel it. He felt the aura of death surrounding the box now. Next, he noticed the smell became more pungent, like a soapy smell. Kaito tried to connect the smell with something, someone. All he could connect it with was Luk... No. He was crazy. How could Luka be in there? He had just seen her the day before, alive and well. But, it smelled just like her. Tears welled up in Kaito's eyes as he weighed the possibility of it being Luka. He pulled back the remaining clumps of hair and saw it.

It was Lukas head. Her eyes wide open, as if she had died in fear. Her pale blue irises had covered with a film and there was no life left in them. Her skin was pale, and cold and the bottom of her neck revealed open arteries and veins. The cut was clean and there had been minimal blood. The most disturbing thing wasn't this though. It was her mouth. Her lips were cracked and stuffed with fingers and toes until it looked like she had almost swallowed some. The corners of her mouth were overstretched, breaking the skin on both sides.

Who would do this?
