Patrick Jane takes off his ring and leaves it on his night table.

His past can't go with him tonight.

He knows he can take this new woman to bed. He feels like he might want to.

He's starved. For understanding. For contact.

He didn't know how starved.

But she brought all those feelings back.

She made a point of commenting on his ring.

He gave her the short version of his life.

Lived somewhere before. Now live here. Wife died. Did some things. Then did some other things. Still thinking about it all.

He woke up in pain.

Did they sleep together? He didn't think so.

She makes a great cup of tea.

She has to leave.

He sees his ring on the night table and winces.

She saw it there.

If he'd brought her home to bed, he would have quickly put it away.

So uncool to have it sitting there.

Maybe he'd sabotaged himself. Left it out on purpose.

So she could see how tenuous his hold on the world of the living is.

How needy he is.

3

Hugo is dead.

The guy at the bar who can speak English keeps not speaking it.

He needs to leave.

4

He's back.

He hugs Lisbon.

Abbott reneges on the deal.

He'll handle Abbott. Abbott needs him.

Then Kim walks in.

There are no coincidences.

She knows too much about him. More than she deserves to know.

She saw the ring on the nightstand.

Lisbon doesn't know.

Kim's seen the cracks in his hard candy shell.

And now, so has Abbott.
