Chapter 1, Difting to Sleep

"And with that on thou nothing seems to sleep,

Upon the shallow creek.

For too long in the water thou stare,

Thou shall never awake from the nightmare."

"Good translation of that poem Yuri. Now you try and translate it Yuki." The teacher turned his attention to Yuki Cross, who was sleeping soundlessly with her head lying on the table in front of her, her brunette hair a mess of uncombed tangles in front of her face. "Miss Cross! I don't care if you are the head master's daughter, you cannot sleep in my class!" At the sound of her name Yuki jolted upright, pushed her shoulder-length hair be hide her ears thinking all the while Can't? I believe I just did. But not wanting to get any worse grades than she already was Yuki apologized and kept the sassy comment to herself. Saved by the song of the school bell Yuki and her two best friends, Zero, a boy she had known for a very long time with silver hair and eyes, and Yuri, and girl with short blonde hair, trotted down to the lunch room.

"I wonder what's for lunch today. I wonder what's for lunch today." She sing-songed as skipped alongside them.

"You fell asleep in class yet you still have enough energy to jump around, you should get your priorities straight." Zero mocked her.

"Don't look so down, Zero-kun!" She smiled back at him.

"Glad to see you're so cheerful today Yuki-chan." The head master, Yuki's adopted father, came up be hide the group. "Now if only you wonder smile a little more too Zero-kun we could be one big happy family!"

"I'm not technically your son, and there's no way I'd be part of your stupid happy go lucky family." Zero kept walking, to the lunch room, Yuki waving to Yuri to go on without her.

"What is it?" Yuki asked, knowing that her father had come to tell her something.

"There's a new transfer student in the night class. I'd like it if you'd help show her around. She's ill, and worried the other vampires will pick on her for it, so I figured I ought to have a human show her around-and could there be a finer human for the job then my kind hearted little daughter? Well, you have permission to skip your next few classes in order to give the girl a full look at the school." He gave her the mission and left her, forgetting to tell her where exactly the new student was. Too bad once poor Yuki realized this it was too late to catch up to the head master.

Oh, what should I do? If she's afraid of the other vampires there's no way she's at the moon dormitory right now. There's no way she's at the day class's dormitory, so I guess that means she must be in the head master's office! Yuki concluded.

"You must be Yuki Cross." The sound of the soft voice made Yuki jump, but as she turned around she saw none other than the transfer student. She knew this of course for she was wearing the night class's white uniform and Yuki had never seen her before. If she had she surly would have remembered, because her long, straight hair was a whimsical shade of lavender, and her eyes large and innocent looking. She appeared more like an angle than a vampire to Yuki. Never before had a vampire appeared so sweet. Even her beloved Kaname had never truly seemed innocent to her. Wonderful, but not innocent.

"Oh, sorry, you surprised me for a moment there. It's nice to meet you." Yuki extended her arm out to the girl in front of her.

"Nice to meet you too. My name is Maria Kurenai."
