Just a little ficlet I made to showcase a poem I wrote… after all, I know I don't enjoy standalone poems (sorry guys) so I figured I'd whip something up. I like how it turned out, though. Some pre M/C going on, if you squint.

Oh, it's set between Innail and Norloc in the first book. In an uneventful part of it.

Disclaimer: Fine, it's not mine. Sure, it's hers. Still (and always), I have nil.

It was night, a rare peaceful one. Maerad was sleeping. Fitfully, it must be said, but sleeping, weary from traveling, and content. That evening, she and Cadvan had practiced on the lyre, something they both enjoyed, since they both loved music. Cadvan, though, was still awake.

And Maerad, laying still at last, slowly opened her eyes, awakened by soft chords and a most familiar voice, murmering.

She didn't sit up, but listened quietly to the song Cadvan was softly singing, and it seemed to slip through the haze of this safe night and rest. She caught every word.

Untrusting yet trusting

Destined to meet.

One who should be innocent

One with well-worn feet.

One whose heart is scorned and hidden

Other's hurt nigh unto same.

Both driven by dark,

Driven by fate.

Cadvan paused here, and Maerad curiously noted that must have written this song- it surely was about them. He deliberated for a moment, then continued, a thoughtful, wondering look on his face.

What will be their path together?

What storms will they, in junction, weather?

What will they develop

Twixt him and twixt her?

The Fire Lily

And her Teacher.

The song came to a questioning but final chord, and Cadvan glanced over at Maerad, an almost tender expression incongruously crossing his ageless face. She quickly shut her eyes, opening them again only when he stopped rustling, apparently asleep.

She was wide awake, and sat up, gazing at his face. It seemed curiously young. In the fire, when he had glanced at her, the fire had flashed into his eyes, making them look full of light, and amazingly blue. Maerad had felt a jolt of… something.

What would happen? Was Cadvan's expression truly tender? If his song was any indication, surely he was as confused as she.

And Maerad slipped back into an uneasy sleep, Cadvan's song repeating in her thoughts.
