A Reason for Returning
A/N: I don't own the story or any of the characters. T.T
Edward Elric sat, stretched out on a bench, waiting for his train to arrive. He knew Winry was talking…..probably about his automail care. He already knew all of this stuff….oiling, keeping it dry, don't get into fights blah blah blah. He knew her so well, he didn't even have to listen. He had other things on his mind. He stared at the sky, commenting when needed.
He felt like he got food poisoning somewhere, his stomach in turmoil. Nerves….it was all nerves. All that time away from her and Resembool… He couldn't do it again…Not without knowing. He moved one of his hands that were in his pockets, hearing a slight jingle. He knew the train was due any moment. It had to be done soon… he fought homunculi and people who had god-like power, but this had him shaking in his shoes. He took a deep breath, and sat up. He was just about to open his mouth when he heard it. His eyes honey eyes widened. That sound…. It signaled exactly what he feared. The bottom of his stomach dropped out. No….
He looked over, and sure enough here was the train. He swallowed the lump in his throat. Oh damn it all….. He gave Winry a smile as the train stopped.
"So, Winry…"
"Oh! There's your train!" He sighed, picked up his suitcase and started walking towards the train.
"You'll probably break it and have to come back in a month." Oh crap! She was still talking! "When you do, just call me for an appointment!"
"Yeah, an appointment…" He stopped just before stepping onto the train. "Hey Winry…" He turned his head. "I….ah….I…"He felt the blush creeping up on his cheeks.
"What…is it Ed?" He heard worry sliding into her voice. He was acting really strange today….stranger than usual, he knew it so he was sure she did too.
He turned to face her, hoping it would make this easier. "Listen Winry…."
"Yes? What is it?"
He felt his face burning, like it was on fire. "Equivalent exchange!" She gave a laugh.
"What?" Edward cleared his throat, and stepped closer to her, still blushing all the while.
"Equivalent exchange. Half my life for half of yours." He held out his hand.
"That is so stupid Edward! Of course you go to alchemy! You can have it all… or…er…maybe 75….no…..80% I…" She stopped when he took her hand. He gave her a small sad smile.
"I know I'll be gone for a while, I don't even know for how long. I want you to take these…I meant to give them back a while ago, but I held on to them, to remember my purpose, what I had to come back to." He looked into her eyes….Oh crap, he may very well throw up on her shoes…. He swallowed hoping to ease the feeling slightly. "You're amazing Winry, and I will come back as soon as I possibly can. And I suppose I should give you 80% as well. Have everything planned out for me." He kissed her forehead, then turned and boarded the train. Once inside he sank into a seat.
"Oh crap I feel like I could pass out…."
Winry opened her hand and saw most of her earrings she gave him to hold while at Fort Briggs. She slowly smiled, closing her hand, holding it to her heart.
Once the train finally got going, Edward sighed, sitting back pushing his hair back, playing with one of his earlobes. "This will get some getting used to." He whispered to himself, touching one of her earrings.
