Have you ever made a regretful decision? I don't mean the typical, "I shouldn't have eaten all those coconuts" kind of regretful.
I mean one that is groundbreaking and Earth shaking for not only yourself...But for others that you could hurt in the process.
The ocean chose me!
The kind that makes you stare at your reflection and not recognize the person that you see staring back. The kind that makes you want to throw everything you've worked for back and away.
Maui!
The kind that truly makes you hate yourself and who you've become.
And here I am, sat on a rock in the middle of the great sea. Alone. Alone again. Because I couldn't muster up the strength to face my fears again. The ocean seemed to shake its head at me, but I know it was just my own disappointment in myself echoing back at me through the waves. My fish hook weighted heavily against my leg as I stared out to the horizon.
I am Moana of Montunui.
I left her. I abandoned her.
What kind of despicable person had I become? I was Maui. Demigod of the Wind and Sea.
Unless you don't want to be...Maui, demigod of the wind and sea. Hero to...All?
Some hero. I had abandoned the one friend that had stood by me through near death experiences and my own wallowing of self pity and misery. The one person that had chose to rise me up alongside herself. The one mortal I truly cared for.
"AGH!" I feel the rock crumble slightly beneath me as my fist slams into it.
The Gods aren't the ones that make you Maui..
No, who they made was not Maui. I was not Maui.
I stared to the sky, a tear sliding down my cheek as I felt the breeze flow against me, strong and to the East. Something didn't feel right, something didn't feel in place. I spin on my heel and see the storm clouds in the distance. Te Fiti...That was the direction of Te Fiti. And those clouds were the dust that came from...
"Moana!"
Throwing my arm hard, I launch from the rock, transforming to my hawk. I can see the smoke growing further and further to the sky, Teka's flames radiating light and heat from ages away. I see his form rise from the barrier islands, and I see a small canoe barreling directly in Teka's direction.
Moana!
My wings flap harshly against the wind, but I can't see to gain the distance I need. I only watch in fear and helplessness as I watch her canoe maneuver around projectiles and flames. She manages to spin the canoe around in the cover of steam and clouds. I'm getting closer but Teka throws a fireball directly above her, causing the rocks to fall and create waves that tip the canoe. I feel the distance between us closing as I spin around to avoid Teka's eye.
I'm coming Moana! Hold on!
She struggles to pull the canoe back, Teka reaches for her.
No!
She hears my call, seeing me fly just above her before I dart for Teka, slicing his hand at the wrist.
"Maui!"
Darting back, I land on the canoe, returning to my form before her. Her smile lights up her entire face, a smile that is brighter than the flames of Teka.
"You came back!" I chuckle at her enthusiasm, looking down at the water.
I wish I had never left...
